As Many As Received Him

A number of times  the apostle John  is referred to  as the disciple  Jesus loved  —  and surely,  John loved Jesus.     In the gospel of John,  he describes Jesus  as the Word  —  God  —  Creator  —  Life  —  Light  —  and the only begotten God.     And sadly,  he reported  that many refused  to receive Jesus  as the long-promised Savior.     But,  on the positive side,  John wrote  in John 1:12,

But  as many as received Him,  to them  He gave  the right  to become children  of God,  even to those  who believe  in His name.

All those  who honestly believed Jesus  “received Him”  into their hearts.     They welcomed the coming  of the Savior  and were assured  of His authority  through His preaching  and many miracles.     To “receive” Jesus  is to “believe  in His name”  —  that is to “believe” that Jesus truly is  who He says He is  —  our Savior.

Unbelievers thought of Jesus  as a fraud,  charlatan,  and fake  —  just as many people of today do.     There are even many  attending church faithfully,  who do not really “believe” that Jesus is  our Savior  from sin.     They go to church  because they feel  it is a good way  to guide people morally  —  and it gives one  a good standing  in the community.

It’s important  to realize  that there is a God,  who created  and sustains  all things  —  but that doesn’t save us.     James 2:19 says,

You believe  that God  is one.     You do well;  the demons also believe,  and shudder.

Just admitting  that God exists  is not enough  to save us.     Even the “demons”  know  that God is for real.     But,  they refuse  to “receive” and welcome Him  into their hearts  and lives.     They don’t want  to repent  of their sins  —  change their sinful ways  —  or glorify God  from the depths  of their being.

Receiving Jesus  —  honestly repenting  and welcoming Him  into our lives  as LORD and God  —  is the believing  that changes our lives   and leads to salvation.

Receiving Jesus,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Creator Savior,  blessed be Your name.”

Love,
Margaret
