Your Fear,  Dread  and Sanctuary

The undisciplined show  that they are not happy  or at peace.     Instead,  they are always showing rebellion,  fears,  suspicions,  complaints,  and hatefulness.     With no peace  or desire for righteous guidance,  they unthinkingly plunge  into all sorts  of sins,  trying to satisfy  their lost condition  —  but only feeling more out-of-sorts  and wanting  to blame someone else  for their problems.

The Israelites were that way  as they rebelled  against Isaiah’s preaching  regarding their sins.     It was a troubling time.     So, God comforted Isaiah  by saying  in Isaiah 8:13-15,

It is the LORD  of hosts  whom you should regard  as holy.
And He shall be  your fear,
And He shall be  your dread

Then  He shall become  a sanctuary;
But  to both the houses  of Israel,  a stone  to strike  and a rock  to stumble over,
And a snare  and a trap  for the inhabitants  of Jerusalem.

Many will stumble over them,
Then they will fall  and be broken;
They will even be snared  and caught.

Isaiah was not  to “fear”  the behavior  of the Israelites  —  just as we should not “fear”  those who belligerently oppose Christianity.     Much rather,  we need to  “fear”  and  “dread”  the  “holy” authority  of “the LORD”,  who will judge  everyone  in the end.

When we  “regard as holy”  all that the LORD is,  we will see  that He actually is  “a sanctuary”  for all  who put their trust  in Him.     God’s love for us  in Christ Jesus  is “holy”,  because in it  God has proven  His almighty power  to keep His word  over thousands  of years.

Unbelievers hatefully  “strike”  at Jesus,  as they  “stumble over”  His truths  in scripture.     They become trapped  by their  stubborn refusal  to believe God’s promises  of salvation  through faith.

As we remain  in our “sanctuary”  in Christ Jesus,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for becoming  our righteousness  through faith.”

Love,
Margaret
