It Was Troublesome in My Sight

The ways  of this world  really get pushed upon us  during this time  called Advent  —  or the Christmas season,  in which one is supposed to be honoring  the Christ Child,  our Savior.     We can be wanting  to direct  our attention  to the reality  of celebrating  the birth  of Jesus  —  but the world  is strongly pushing Santa,   expensive presents,  and songs  that do not  honor Christ  —  not to mention those  who seek  to push  their agendas  to take Christ down.

Those who object  to honoring  our Savior  seem to be  much more powerful  in pushing their agenda,  than Christians are  in respectfully praising  the LORD.     This sort  of thing  is not only “troublesome”  during the Christmas season,  but in every other time  in which the world  seems to be  more popular  and powerful  in their set goals  than Christians are.

The psalmist, Asaph,  in Psalm 73,  mentions  that those who oppose God  seem to be successful  in their every endeavor.     They openly mock God  and seem  to get away with it.     Asaph says  he wouldn’t dare  to speak  so disrespectfully  against God’s  eternal truths.     Asaph points out  in Psalm 73:15-19,

If I had said,  “I will speak thus,”
Behold,  I would have betrayed the generation  of Your children.
When I pondered  to understand this,
It was troublesome  in my sight
Until I came  into the sanctuary  of God;
Then I perceived  their end.
Surely  You set them  in slippery places;
You cast them down  to destruction.
How they are destroyed  in a moment!
They are utterly swept away  by sudden terrors!

This thought  struck Asaph.     He sadly realized  all those  who reject  God’s salvation  through faith  would be paying the price  of eternal  “destruction”.     To follow the ways  of this world  will only betray God’s “children”  in the years  to come.     Nobody should dare  do such a thing.

When troubled  by this world,  we turn  to God’s eternal truths,  and say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for staying near  in truth.”

Love,
Margaret
