I Am Not Doing This for Your Sake

It doesn’t take much at all  for people  to get puffed up  and imagine  that God  is granting them great favors  just because they are wonderful people.     To set them straight  and put them on the right track,  God told His people  in Ezekiel 36:32,

I am not doing this  for your sake,”  declares the Lord GOD,  “let it be known  to you.     Be ashamed  and confounded  for your ways,  O house  of Israel!”

What was God talking about?     The Israelites were in captivity in Babylonia,  because of all their sins.     They were languishing.     Life was awful.     Through Ezekiel,  God promised many wonderful things:   they would be returned  to their own land  —  they would be cleansed  of all their sins  —  they would be given a new heart  and clean spirit  —  they would be blessed  with good crops  —  and they would learn  to loathe their past sins.

All of that  was a wonderful  and great relief.     But,  God let them know,  “I am not doing this  for your sake”.     The Israelites had not made themselves worthy  of all these blessings.     Because of their ongoing sins,  they still needed  to  “be ashamed and confounded”  for their sinful ways.

God was giving them all these blessings  for His own name’s sake.     In other words,  if God were  to continue punishing the Israelites  with captivity,  the heathen nations  would boast  that the LORD  was not able  to deliver His people  out of captivity.     Those heathens  would imagine  that their gods were stronger  than the LORD  and that they had  the upper hand  because they were so great.     None of that was true.

So,  for His own name’s sake,  God delivered the Israelites  out of captivity  and returned them  to their own land.

God does the same  for us sinners.     In no way can we deserve  eternal salvation.     But,  God simply gives it to us  for Jesus’ sake.

Thanking God  for graciously sending Jesus  to be our Savior,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for giving us  Your awesome grace  through faith  in Jesus.”

Love,
Margaret
