Digging In Garbage

Years ago,  on our ranch,  our Border Collie,  Barney,  loved to dig  in garbage.   He thought  he had quite the treat  if he could find something rotten  to eat  or to even roll in,  if he was in the mood  for hunting  and wanted to cover up  his natural scent.   Then Barney couldn’t understand why  I didn’t want to pet him  in his repugnant,  perfumed condition.     Such is life.

We, also, can get into  a similar doggy mode  and become real stinkers  in God’s presence.   Just like a dog,  people can dig up the rotten garbage  of their past  or the past  of someone else  they have a grudge against.     They will “eat” the garbage  of the past  by constantly dwelling  on the hurts,  failures,  and sins  of years ago.   Perceived wrongs  are repeatedly mulled over  until their perception is warped  way out of proportion.

To guide us  in the power  of Christ’s cleansing  for each and every one  of us,  1 Peter 4:8 says,

Above all,  keep fervent  in your love  for one another,  because love  covers a multitude  of sins.

In some scenarios  are those  who  claim  that God doesn’t love them  and won’t forgive them.     They dejectedly stay  in their stinky sadness,  not realizing  that God truly does love them  and desires  that they accept  His forgiveness  for all their sins  —  becoming fresh  and clean  before our loving Lord.

In other scenarios are those  who refuse  to forgive anybody  they feel  has wronged them.     They brood  and fester ill feelings,  that become warped  and intensified  with the passage  of time.     They need  and desire forgiveness  for their own sins,  but refuse  to forgive  the perceived sins  of others.     They choose  to remain unhappy  in their stinky feelings.

Like Barney  rolling in garbage  to hide his real scent,  they roll  in the muck  of their perceived wrongs.

God wants  to cleanse us  so that the scented perfume  of our life  is pleasing  to Him  and everyone around us.     Resting  in Jesus’ forgiveness,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for Your gift  of love.”
