Do You Not Listen to the Law?

We run into problems  when we don’t really listen  —  in whatever the situation might be.     We end up doing wrong,  but want  to make excuses  and not have to  face the consequences  of our wrong.     So,  we do need  to pay attention  to all sorts  of instructions.

The very most important set  of instructions is  in God’s word.     We must pay attention  to all of it,  not just snippets.     When not  paying attention,  some imagine  that going to church is  all that is required  for eternal salvation.     They are trusting  in their own good behavior  to pass God’s final Judgment Day  and enter heaven.     They are not listening  to all  of God’s word.

Galatians 4:21  questions us,

Tell me,  you who want  to be under the law,  do you not listen  to the law?

Those who d0  “not listen  to the law”  wrongly think  that church attendance  is all  that the law  of God requires.

Some people  really want  to be God pleasing,  and feel  that they need  to please the Lord  by putting forth  their very best efforts  to become a better person.     But,  God’s law  does not say  we are to be better.     The law actually demands  that we  be  just as holy  as God is holy  —  that is absolute perfection  at all times.     Those best efforts  of ours  are worthless  when it comes to real holiness.      And,  that is not  what God wants.     Jesus says  in Matthew 5:48,

Therefore  you are  to be perfect,  as your heavenly Father  is perfect.

So,  the law is not asking us  to resolve   to be a better person  than others  —  or to try harder  to be better.     But,  God’s word  in John 3:16  does say,

For God  so loved  the world,  that He gave  His only begotten Son,  that whoever believes  in Him  shall not perish,  but have eternal life.

Paying close attention  and believing  God’s word  is doing  what’s right.     So, we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for the gift  of eternal life.”

Love,
Margaret
