Great Is Your Faithfulness

We all go through times  of affliction  —  sometimes through no fault  of our own,  and sometimes  as a result  of our sins.     Jerusalem  was afflicted  with destruction  because of their sinfulness  and refusal  to listen  to God’s words  of warning  through the prophet Jeremiah.

Jeremiah wept bitterly  because of the fall  of Jerusalem.     In his love for God  and the people  of Jerusalem,  Jeremiah was terribly afflicted  with sorrow.     In Lamentations 3:19-23,  he wrote,

Remember my affliction  and my wandering,  the wormwood  and bitterness.

Surely  my soul remembers
And is bowed down  within me.

This I recall  to my mind,
Therefore  I have hope.

The LORD’S lovingkindnesses  indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.

They are new  every morning;
Great  is Your faithfulness.

Even in the depth  of his sorrow,  Jeremiah  knew  that God is compassionate  and faithful  in His love.     Jeremiah also knew that  in the whole  of things,  it was good  for the people  of Jerusalem  to suffer defeat  —  and he said they should quietly bear their punishment,  considering their ways.     In verse 26,  Jeremiah said,

It is good  that he waits silently
For the salvation  of the LORD.

In the “faithfulness” of His love,  God gives us time  to think  about our ways  and see how wrong  we’ve been.    With a humble  and grateful heart,  Jeremiah said  in verses 31-33,

For the Lord  will not reject forever,
For  if He causes grief,
Then  He will have compassion
According to  His abundant lovingkindness.

For  He does not afflict willingly
Or grieve  the sons of men.

God’s judgments  of our sins  are meant  to lead us  to love,  respect,  and obey  our Creator Redeemer  with all that is good and right.     Our Savior is our greatest good.     We need  to see that.

Glad for God’s love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Great is Your faithfulness!”
