The Seed Is the Word of God

People have all sorts  of opinions  about the word  of God  —  ranging from vehement unbelief  to a strong faith  that actually gladly lives  according to God’s word.     They have heard  at least something  about Christ Jesus,  but have different reactions  over time.     Jesus described  various reactions  in Luke 8:11-15,

Now the parable is this:  the seed  is  the word  of God.     Those beside the road  are those who have heard;  then the devil comes  and takes away the word  from their heart,  so that they will not believe  and be saved.

Those on the rocky soil  are those who,  when they hear,  receive the word with joy;  and these have no firm root;  they believe for a while,  and in time of temptation  fall away.

The seed  which fell among the thorns,  these are the ones who have heard,  and as they go on their way  they are choked  with worries  and riches  and pleasures of this life,  and bring no fruit to maturity.

But the seed  in the good soil,  these are the ones  who have heard the word  in an honest  and good heart,  and hold it fast,  and bear fruit  with perseverance.

This parable  is not meant  for anyone  to judge another.     Rather,  it is for us  to look  at our own lives  and reactions  to God’s word  to us.     Are we allowing  all the temptations  of this world  lure us away  from the love  of God?     Are we so absorbed  in the stuff  of this world  that we let the  “worries and riches and pleasures  of this life” stunt down  our faith  into nothingness?

Everyone in this world faces temptations and trials  of every sort  —  even those with  “an honest  and good heart”.     Note  that those with  “an honest  and good heart”  stay true  to God  “with perseverance”.     Life  is not a cake walk  for them either.     But,  they see  the eternal,  blessed value  of God’s gift  of forgiveness  through faith  in Christ.

Striving  to persevere,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Thank You,  LORD,  for being our strength and song.”

Love,
Margaret
