If You Have Tasted

If is such a big word  that encompasses a lot  of possibilities.     The Apostle Peter used it  in writing  to the early Christians  about their life  with the Lord,  while still living  on this earth.     In 1 Peter 2:1-3,  he says,

Therefore,   putting aside all malice  and all guile  and hypocrisy  and envy  and all slander,  like newborn babes,   long for the pure milk  of the word,  that by it  you may grow  in respect  to salvation,   if   you have tasted  the kindness  of the Lord.

That is an awesome if.     Peter is saying that if”  Christians  have honestly realized  just how greatly  God has loved them  and longed  to give them  the free gift  of salvation  —  even while they lived  in their sins  —  they would naturally want  to learn more  and more  about God’s life-giving love  for them.

We know how newborn babies cry  when they are hungry.     They truly want  their mother’s milk  right now,   and they refuse  to be quiet  about it.     Newborn babies  instinctively know  that they absolutely must have  that pure milk  in order  to live  and grow.

It is the same  for us.     We cannot expect  to really live  “if” we rarely  —  “if” ever  —  get to feed  on the kindness  of our Lord  in His word  and salvation.     “If”  we have any clue  about how wonderful it is  to be forgiven  of all our sins,  we will long for  and loudly cry out  for more  of God’s word,  so that we might grow  and live  in the freedom  of God’s love.

When we realize  how ugly  and deathly  all malice,  guile,  hypocrisy,  envy,  and slander is,  we will want  to escape all that sort  of evil  and grab hold  of the life-giving love  that God longs  to give us  in His salvation  in Christ Jesus.

Our life here is very,  very short.     “If” we are not partaking  of God’s scripture  every day  and growing  in salvation,  we are dying  in our sins.     Nobody can have  a healthy growth  in God’s love  “if” they refuse  to partake  of His word  every day  and live by it.

As we thankfully eat  of God’s kindness  in His word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  Your love  has saved us  to live  for You.”

Love,
Margaret
