The Dead Do Not Praise the LORD

God’s word has two meanings  when speaking about  “the dead”.     First,  there are those  who are spiritually “dead”.     They are now physically living  on this earth,  but they don’t believe  in God  and don’t care  about God.     They just want  to live  in whatever way  they choose to live  on earth.

Second,  there are the physically “dead”,  who never believed  in God  —  and  —  have died physically.     They end up  in eternal hell  for their unbelief  and sins.     Psalm 115:17  mentions both  of these situations,

The dead  do not praise  the LORD,
Nor do any  who go down  into silence;

This is something to think about.     The spiritually “dead”  never  “praise the LORD”  while they are physically alive  on earth  and having many opportunities  to hear  about God’s love  and salvation  through faith  in Christ Jesus.     Instead of acknowledging their sins  and accepting the gift  of forgiveness,  many mock God  and Christianity.     Or else  they just ignore Christian concepts  and simply live  in their own  chosen life style.

That spiritual deadness  will eventually be judged  for its refusal  to accept the truth  of God’s faithful love  and almighty power  in all things.     When they physically die,  they will  “go down  into silence”  —  eternal hell.     They won’t “praise the LORD”  down there either.

But  then,  Psalm 115:18  declares  the opposite  of all those  who do believe  God’s word.     It says,

But  as for us,  we will  bless the LORD
From this time forth  and forever.
Praise the LORD!

What a blessed way  to be.     Believers  acknowledge their sins  and “praise the LORD”  for the gift  of forgiveness.     They admit  that God is almighty  in all things,  whether it be creation,  daily sustaining all things,  or saving our souls  unto eternal life.     Note  that believers  “praise”  God now  and  “forever”  in eternal life.

So glad  to know God’s faithful love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for eternal life  in Christ Jesus.”

Love,
Margaret
