Strengthen the Hands That Are Weak

Strengthen the Hands That Are Weak

Years ago,  there was a news story  about a scientist,  who performed  an experiment  on himself,  with the help  of his family.     He wanted  to find out  what would happen to him  if he did nothing  but lay  in bed.     I don’t recall how long his family nursed him along,  feeding,  bathing,  and taking care  of his every personal need.     But,  in due time,  he was totally unable  to move  or care about anything.

The situation  was not good.     The family then began  physically moving his limbs,  setting him upright  and even exercising his hands.     He had lost  his desire  to move.     With much dedication  from family members,  he gradually regained  his desire  to move  and after much further family effort  was one day able  to walk out  to his mailbox  in the front yard.

That same  lack of ability  and desire  happens  in our spiritual lives.     If we don’t pray  and study God’s word  for a long time,  we become spiritually weak  —  and then unable  to believe  in God’s promises.      God’s promises  —  and ability  to fulfill  His promises  —  have not changed.     But those  who don’t stay close  to God  become weakened,  and may even die spiritually  in unbelief.

Hebrews 12:12  tells weakened Christians  what  to do,

Therefore,  strengthen the hands  that are weak  and the knees  that are feeble,  and make straight paths for your feet,  so that the limb  which is lame  may not be put   out of joint,  but rather be healed.

We “strengthen”  our spiritual “hands”“knees”“limbs”,  and “joints”  by studying  and  learning  God’s word  to us.     Studying the Bible  to grow  in faith,  hope,  love  —  and understanding  God’s desire  for us —   is much more valuable  than the physical exercise  our bodies need.

Glad  that God wants  to keep us  in good spiritual shape,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for strengthening our faith  through Your word  and the needed disciplines  in life.”

Love,
Margaret
