Humble Circumstances

Many people tend  to avoid  those they consider  to be poor people  of various circumstances.     They might consider one poor  if they lack money,  have a disability,  don’t have the latest clothes,  or whatever.     Whatever their reason  for being embarrassed  to be  by the poor,  they might have  a few facts  turned around.

God’s word  wants us  to see  and understand things  rightly.     So,  James 1:9-11 says,

But the brother  of humble circumstances  is to glory  in his high position;  and the rich man  is to glory   in his humiliation,  because like flowering grass  he will pass away.     For the sun rises with a scorching wind  and withers the grass;  and its flower falls off  and the beauty  of its appearance  is destroyed;  so too the rich man  in the midst   of his pursuits  will fade away.

When a person believes  in Jesus,  what people think  they see  is not what God sees.      Whether a believer  is rich,  poor,  young,  old,  disabled,  strong,  homely,  beautiful,  or whatever,  does not matter  in this life.     That supposedly poor  believer  is actually held  in very high regard  in God’s eyes.     Why?     Because  his faith is great  as he endures  his trials.

So,  if we are living  in  “humble circumstances”  of any sort  and trust  in our Savior  through all  our challenges,  God sees us  as being  in a very  “high position”  of having the wonderful gift  of faith  and eternal salvation.     The poor are  to  “glory”  in God’s special promises  for them.

The “rich”  are to  “glory”  in their “humiliation”.     God has a very tough row  for them  to hoe.     In  “humiliation”  they have the dangerous job  of avoiding pride,  self-righteousness,  being judgmental,  loving their riches,  etc.     They could so easily  fall from faith.     In their challenges,  they are  to “glory”  in the fact  that God will faithfully stay by them  as they humbly trust Him only.

No matter what our circumstances,  we are to always look  to Christ Jesus  to strengthen and keep us.     So,  in all things,  we all say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  blessed be  Your saving love.”

Love,
Margaret
