Quick, Slow, Slow

We all  have knee-jerk reactions  to whatever situation  is at hand.     But  nevertheless,  we still need  to try  to guard  against it.     Why?     Because God Almighty  has shown us  —  even us  —  His grace  of forgiveness,  just so that we   would  be strengthened  to start living  according to His love  in Christ Jesus.

Because God  has patiently shown grace  to us,  we should be patiently gracious  with those  who believe in God,  but whom we think  have stumbled  in some way  or another.     Though we see their way  as wrong,  we should be  as patient  with them  as God is  with us.     So,  James 1:19  says,

Everyone must be quick  to hear,  slow  to speak  and slow  to anger;  for the anger  of man  does not achieve  the righteousness  of God.

When God brought us  to faith  in the truths  of His eternal word,  God’s other children  were patient  with us.     We weren’t immediately perfect  in all  of God’s ways.     We believed  in Jesus  —  but had faults  to overcome then,  as we still do.     As we grew  in understanding  of God’s truths,  we were able  to understand  the ugliness  of our sinful inclinations,  and want  to get rid  of them.

God’s word  was working  in our hearts.     We need  to patiently let God’s word grow  in the hearts  of others.     Realizing our ongoing imperfections,  we need  to be  quick  to hear”  the plight  of others  —  slow  to speak”  words  of vehement condemnation  —  and slow  to anger”  that does not remember  God’s grace  in Christ  towards us.

That’s a lot  to pack in to a split-second moment  —  but,  it is a remembrance  of God’s love.

So,  we remember our sins  —  remember God’s grace  —  and strive  to live  by it.     Then,  we will be  honestly living  in God’s grace.

Appreciating  God’s love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  Your every way  is perfect  and life-giving.”

Love,
Margaret
