Yet I Am Not By This Acquitted

Yet  I Am Not  By This  Acquitted

Some people get “acquitted”  by a judge  for a number  of reasons.     Maybe there was not enough evidence against them  —  maybe false witnesses were discovered  —  or maybe there was proof  that the accused  was no where near  the crime scene.     What a relief it must be  to be “acquitted”  of a crime  you did not commit.

But,  an even greater amazement  would be  to be “acquitted”  of a crime  you actually did commit.     To be pronounced not guilty,  when you really know  you are guilty  would be astounding.     Who would want  to debate  that verdict  on their behalf?

In all that,  we need  to realize  how we are  so accustomed  to all sorts  of sin  in our lives  that we no longer think  of it as sin.     We might not be “conscious”  of all the sin  in our lives  —  but,  God most certainly is.     God knows full well  how numb  we are  to the grossness  of our sins.     We might be aware  of how murder  is a sin  —  but not consider  how the unwarranted hatred  in our hearts  is actually murder.     That numbness  to our sinful condition  is why many feel  they have no sins  to confess  to the Lord  —  when  in actuality  their sins condemn them  for all eternity.

This is why  the apostle Paul wrote  in 1 Corinthians 4:4,

For I am conscious  of nothing  against myself,  yet I am  not  by this  acquitted;  but the one  who examines me  is the Lord.

The Lord “examines”  all  of us.     Truth be told  —  we are all guilty  and in desperate need  of a Savior.     That is why King David prayed  in Psalm 19:12,

Who can discern  his errors?     Acquit me  of hidden faults.

As we earnestly pray  that prayer,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for sending Jesus  to pay  for all our sins  and acquit us.”

Love,
Margaret
