Things New and Old

The word  of God  is full  of treasures.     Because God is so awesome  —  far beyond  our imaginations  —  we keep on learning new things  as we keep on  studying God’s word.     As a child,  we learned Bible stories,  and might have felt  that we really knew God.     Each of those Bible stories  was a treasure  to us,  and we might even have shared them  with others.     As we shared,  we shared all  that was  in our hearts.     And yet,  there are  many more treasures  that we were unaware of.

As Jesus preached,  the people noted  that He truly  was preaching God’s word  —  the truths contained  in the Old Testament.     And yet,  He also taught things  that were new  to the people,  even though  they were concepts taught  in the Old Testament.     As Jesus taught a number  of parables  about the kingdom of heaven,  He then asked His disciples  in Matthew 13:51-52,

“Have you understood  all these things?”

They said to Him,  “Yes.”

And Jesus said to them,  “Therefore  every scribe  who has become  a disciple  of the kingdom of heaven  is like a head  of a household,  who brings out  of his treasure  things new  and old.”

In the Bible,  a “scribe”  is a learned teacher  of God’s word.     The Bible even tells of scribes,  who did not  interpret God’s word correctly,  so they were a hindrance  to God’s truths.     But Jesus  was talking about a “scribe”  “who has become a disciple  of the kingdom of heaven.

That would be someone,  who understood  that the “Old”  Testament  has many prophesies  that were fulfilled  in Christ Jesus  in the “New”  Testament  —  “things new  and old”.       These are truths  to be treasured,  because they lead us  to God.

We need  to find these “treasures”  and make them  a part  of our treasury  of God’s word.     Then we can be  a good “scribe”  of God’s word.

Digging  for treasures  in God’s word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Thank You,  LORD,  for showing Your word  to us.”

Love,
Margaret
