How Often I Wanted to Gather Your Children Together
It seems most people go through life “blind in one eye, and can’t see out the other”. They either can’t see — or don’t want to see — God’s faithful love for them. That’s been true from the beginning of time when people started sinning. The bottom line is that much of our sinning is based on refusing to trust God.
People are of the opinion that they can take care of themselves much better than God can because God “obviously” doesn’t seem to satisfy all their “desires“. They don’t want to talk about the fact that many of their desires are based on all sorts of sin.
In spite of the fact that God has dearly loved His people down through the ages, people have fought against God with their rebellious sins, denials of God’s truths, mockery of God’s word, the despising and harassment of God’s faithful children, etc. Even when Jesus was preaching, many religious leaders hated Him and planned His death.
In Matthew 23, Jesus specifically pointed out their hypocritical ways. Then in sadness, Jesus said in Matthew 23:37-39,
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.
As we stand guilty of all sorts of sin, we need to open our eyes to all that God has done for our salvation down through the ages. The Bible is the historical record of God’s prophecies of a Savior and the fulfillment of those prophecies in Christ Jesus. We need to see that we are still dearly loved — even though we have sinned greatly. Christ still wants to gather us close to His heart and into His protective care.
Are we willing or not? What will satisfy us in eternity?
Standing in awe of God’s undeserved love, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, hold us close in Your tender care.”
Love,
Margaret
