Our Trust Fund

These days,  it seems there are quite a few TV ads  for financial success.     Of course,  they all stress  how much happier  people will be  if they are rolling  in the dough.     Paul saw things  in a different light,  an eternal light.     Because people always tend  to worry  about meeting their needs  and greeds,  Paul felt  it was necessary  to show us  how and why  we need  to see some truths.

He says  in Philippians 4:11b-13“I have learned  to be content  in whatever circumstances I am.     I know how  to get along  with humble means,  and I also know how  to live  in prosperity;  in any  and every circumstance  I have learned the secret  of being filled  and going hungry,  both of having abundance  and suffering need.     I can do all things  through Him  who strengthens me.”

Upon hearing that,  one might sigh,  “Yeah, right.     Easier said  than done.”

And that’s true.     It is easier said  than done  because we all need  to learn  to trust  our heavenly Father’s ways  with us.     We might not “enjoy”  what God allows us  to go through,  but there is one thing for sure,  learning to trust God  is much more valuable  than all the money  in the world.

We might think,  “Bummer!”  —  but loving God’s love  leads  to eternal life.     Through beatings,  hunger,  shipwreck  and all sorts of trials,  Paul learned  that God would get him through  every one  of these circumstances,  simply because  God loved him so much  that He even sent Jesus  to suffer  and die for our sins.

If God loves us  that much,  He certainly will care  for our daily needs.     So there’s our test.     Do we respect  God’s proclaimed love  for us  enough to trust His promises?     Do we believe  God is telling the truth  when He promises  to be with us  and strengthen us?

Psalm 33 outlines  many reasons  why we should trust  and sing God’s praises  no matter what is happening  around us.     Count them.     Listen to the psalmist’s reasoning  and believe:

Sing for joy  in the LORD, O you righteous ones;
Praise is becoming  to the upright.

Give thanks  to the LORD  with the lyre;
Sing praises  to Him  with a harp  of ten strings.

Sing to Him  a new song;
Play skillfully  with a shout  of joy.

For the word  of the LORD  is upright,
And all His work  is done  in faithfulness.

He loves righteousness  and justice;
The earth is full  of the lovingkindness  of the LORD.

By the word  of the LORD  the heavens  were made,
And by the breath  of His mouth  all their host.

He gathers the waters  of the sea together  as a heap;
He lays up the deeps  in storehouses.

Let all the earth  fear the LORD;
Let all the inhabitants  of the world  stand in awe  of Him.

For He spoke,  and it was done;
He commanded,  and it stood fast.

The LORD nullifies  the counsel  of the nations;
He frustrates  the plans  of the peoples.

The counsel of the LORD  stands forever,
The plans  of His heart  from generation  to generation.

Blessed is the nation  whose God  is the LORD,
The people  whom He has chosen  for His own inheritance.

The LORD looks  from heaven;
He sees all the sons  of men;

From His dwelling place  He looks out
On all the inhabitants  of the earth,

He who fashions the hearts  of them all,
He who understands  all their works.

The king  is not saved  by a mighty army;
A warrior  is not delivered  by great strength.

A horse  is a false hope  for victory;
Nor does it deliver anyone  by its great strength.

Behold,  the eye of the LORD  is on those  who fear Him,
On those  who hope  for His lovingkindness,

To deliver their soul  from death
And to keep them alive  in famine.

Our soul waits  for the LORD;
He is our help  and our shield.

For our heart rejoices  in Him,
Because we trust  in His holy name.

Let Your lovingkindness,  O LORD,  be upon us,
According as we have hoped  in You.

Thinking on all this,  we can only say,  “Hallelujah!     God most truly cares  for our souls.”

Love,
Margaret
