He Who Does Not Take Offense at Me

Many people  “take offense”  at Jesus  and His followers.     Much of the time,  it is because  they feel guilty about their lives  —  and feel accused,  even though no one has said anything.     The offended  just don’t want anyone around,  who might possibly think,  feel,  or say anything  about their rebellious life style.     They even feel justified  in attacking anyone  who seems like  they might be  a Christian,  or uphold Christian values.

And then  there are those  who think  of Jesus  as an okay myth  or philosopher.     They are okay  with the idea  of Jesus teaching good morals,  so that people can learn  to be more civilized.     But,  they also think  that Jesus cannot forgive anyone  for anything  —  and that He is not God  come down  to save us  from our sins.     Jesus is a pitiful joke to them,  and so they are offended  by the idea of having faith  in Jesus.

John the Baptist  had a different feeling  as he sat  in prison  for preaching  about Jesus  being our Savior.     He had spent His life preaching  about the Messiah  —  and even pointed people  to Jesus  as our promised Savior  —  but it was hard  to imagine why he was suffering imprisonment,  when he was simply obeying  God’s call  to preach.

John had his disciples  go and ask Jesus  if He actually was  the promised Savior.     Jesus then did  many miraculous healings  and told John’s disciples  to tell John  about them all.     Only God our Savior  could do  all that,  so Jesus wanted John  to keep a strong faith  in God’s way  of working.     Then,  Jesus added  in Luke 7:23,

And blessed is he  who does not take offense  at Me.

As we face our various life challenges  and the hatred  of unbelievers,  we also need  to remember  all that Jesus did  in fulfilling many Old Testament prophecies  about the Savior.     That is the biggest miracle  of all,  and it spanned thousands  of years.     God’s word  is just as trustworthy today  as it was then.

Assured of God’s loving wisdom  in our lives,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank you for helping us grow  in Your word.”

Love,
Margaret
