Concerning the Word of Life
Many Bible passages need to be spiritually discerned — they are not literal — so they are not to be thought of in an earthly, physical way. One example is where Jesus says in John 6:35,
I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
Jesus is not speaking of a physical loaf of bread. When we eat earthly bread, we will soon be hungry again. But, when we accept Jesus as our Savior and believe in Him, we are spiritually satisfied forever. Believing in Jesus, we won’t be searching for anything else to satisfy our longings in life.
In that same chapter, Jesus had also explained,
For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world. John 6:33
I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh. John 6:51
Knowing and believing this spiritual truth and all the Old Testament prophecies about the Savior, the Apostle John was able to say in 1 John 1:1-3,
What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life — and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us — what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.
It is because of spiritually discerned passages like these that many people reject Jesus as their Savior. They lack an understanding of the LORD God Almighty, who is our Creator Redeemer. And so, Jesus had to teach us all in John 4:24,
God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
Let us open up our Bibles and learn about things “concerning the Word of Life”, so that God may lead us in the truths that will lead us to eternal life. Then we will say with assurance, “Hallelujah! Lord, the power of Your Word of Life gives eternal life to all who believe in You.”
