A Different Spirit Or a Different Gospel

A Different Spirit Or a Different Gospel

Words can be ever so subtle  and deceptive  when someone wants  to deceive us.     The deceiver can make things sound  so innocent  —  when in fact,  he is leading us  into danger  —  and possibly,  eternal death.     That’s how it was  for the Corinthians  that the apostle Paul  was writing to.     Paul pleaded  in 2 Corinthians 11:3-4,

But I am afraid that,  as the serpent  deceived Eve  by his craftiness,  your minds  will be led astray  from the simplicity  and purity  of devotion  to Christ.     For  if one comes  and preaches another Jesus  whom we have not preached,  or you receive  a different spirit  which you have not received,  or a different gospel  which you have not accepted,  you bear this beautifully.

When  “the serpent  deceived Eve”,  it was not some bold statement  about defying God.     Instead,  it was just hints  that they surely would not die  just for eating  an apple.     Then  there was the seductive hint  that their “eyes would be opened”  and they would actually become  “like God,  knowing good  and evil”.     Now,  that sounded  really good.

Satan is still dropping hints  of various sorts  to people today.     He sounds so good  and promising  for better things  in this life.     With all these seemingly good “opportunities”  to improve  our lives,  people’s  minds are gradually changed  to begin disregarding God  and imagining  that there is a better,  smarter way  to live.

In a short order  the people soon have  “a different spirit”  and actually believe  “a different gospel”.     These days,  this “different spirit”  and  “different gospel”  could be a new age concept,  so-called “Christian yoga”,  a philosophy,  work righteousness,  false doctrines,  or anything else  that is the least bit different  from what God’s word actually teaches.

Paul does not want Christians  to be so  “beautifully”  accommodating  to all these deceptions  and twistings  of God’s word.     We need  to be aware  of the deceptiveness  of this world,  so that our minds  will not be  “led astray  from the simplicity  and purity  of devotion  to Christ”.

We do need  to be strengthened  with God’s word  every day,  so we can recognize deceptions  and safely remain in the truth.     In the joy  of God’s truths,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for Your word.”

Love,
Margaret
