If You Have Bitter Jealousy

If You Have Bitter Jealousy

“Bitter jealousy”  is something  many  have to deal with.     It doesn’t take much at all  to become jealous  of what someone else has.     It could be anything from riches,  to power,  to popularity,  down to some small worldly item.     One might have tons more  than the person  they are jealous of,  but that is not taken  into consideration.     The rich are often jealous  of the poor  and hatefully try  to take things away  from the poor.     There is no common sense  to these situations.

James, chapter 3  emphasizes  how very small things  control big things  —  like a small rudder  controlling a big ship,  a small bit  controlling a whole horse,  and our small tongues  setting the course  of our whole lives  towards hell.

People might imagine they are powerful  when they boldly lie  against  God’s truth,  but actually,  they are condemning their own selves down  to hell,  because their jealous hatred  is not  in accord  with the faith,  hope,  and love  required  by God.

So,  James 3:13-18 instructs us,

Who among you  is wise  and understanding?      Let him show  by his good behavior  his deeds  in the gentleness  of wisdom.     But  if you have bitter jealousy  and selfish ambition  in your heart,  do not be arrogant  and so lie  against  the truth.      This wisdom  is not that  which comes down  from above,  but is earthly,  natural,  demonic.     For where jealousy  and selfish ambition exist,  there is disorder  and every evil thing.     But  the wisdom  from above  is first pure,  then peaceable,  gentle,  reasonable,  full of mercy  and good fruits,  unwavering,  without hypocrisy.     And the seed  whose fruit  is righteousness  is sown  in peace  by those  who make peace.

There is a whole lot  to think on  in James’ words here.     Knowing we are  in God’s loving care,  we have no reason  for “bitter jealousy”.     We don’t need  to be constantly tearing  other people down.     It’s scary  to realize  that such “bitter jealousy”  is actually “demonic”.     We want God’s love  to lead us  —  not Satan’s evil ways.

Resting  our whole lives  in God’s tender care,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  Your love  and wisdom  are all we need  to carry us through  this earthly life.”

Love,
Margaret
