They Mingled With the Nations

They Mingled With the Nations

Psalm 106 tells  of the wonderful joy  the Israelites experienced  when they were set free  from 430 years  of slavery  to the Egyptians.     Those who were set free  had never experienced freedom  in their whole lives.     On the other hand,  we have many freedoms  in our lives,  but we still experience  being tied  to sin.

One might even be totally enslaved  to the sins  that control their lives.     People can be enslaved to hatred,  jealousy,  greed,  lust,  cults,  superstitions,  heathen practices,  unbelief,  and all sorts of similar worldly sins  that rob them  of the freedoms  we can have  in Christ.

When the Israelites were set free  from the labors  of their enslavement  to Egypt,  it didn’t take long  before they enslaved themselves  to idol worship.     Psalm 106:35-39 says,

But they mingled  with the nations
And learned  their practices,
And served  their idols,
Which became a snare  to them.

They even sacrificed  their sons  and their daughters  to the demons,
And shed  innocent blood,
The blood  of their sons  and their daughters,
Whom they sacrificed  to the idols  of Canaan;
And the land  was polluted  with the blood.

Thus  they became unclean  in their practices,
And played the harlot  in their deeds.

All  who turn  to Christ Jesus  in faith  are forgiven  and set free  from all  of their sins.     Many will enjoy that forgiveness  —  and then slavishly  turn back  to the sins of the world.      Why?     Because  “they mingled  with the nations”.     Acting like all the unbelievers  around them,  they think  it is okay  to live  in all sorts  of worldliness,  heathen practices,  cults,  false doctrines,  and ungodliness.

This wishy-washiness  is nothing new.     The apostle Paul had to give a warning  in Colossians 2:8,

See to it  that no one takes you captive  through philosophy  and empty deception,  according to the tradition  of men,  according to the elementary principles  of the world,  rather than  according to Christ.

All our lives  we need  to be  on guard  against the trickiness  of Satan,  who is constantly looking for ways  to take us away  from a true faith,  hope,  and love.     Let’s watch it.

Victorious  only in Christ,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for setting us free.     Let us always follow Your truths only.”

Love,
Margaret
