Saying, “This Is the Temple of the LORD”
God was terribly upset by those who pretentiously worshiped in His temple. He said in Jeremiah 7:3,
Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place.
That temple has long been destroyed because of the sins of the Israelites. What upset the LORD was the hypocrisy and deception of the people and their religious leaders as they loved their sins and pretended to love the LORD. Besides committing many sins, these people had many other gods. Yet, they would they would hypocritically go to the Temple and say,
This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD. (Jeremiah 7:4)
No one can honestly love and worship at “the temple of the LORD” while they really love their sins and many gods. God promised that only those who obeyed Him and would not “walk after other gods to your own ruin” (Jeremiah 7:6) would be able to dwell in the Promised Land.
But, these people were trusting deceptive leaders and following the crowd, in order to be accepted by them. That is why God says in Jeremiah 7:8-10,
Behold, you are trusting in deceptive words to no avail. Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery and swear falsely, and offer sacrifices to Baal and walk after other gods that you have not known, then come and stand before Me in this house, which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’ — that you may do all these abominations?
Worshiping the LORD is not to be a pretentious, hypocritical act to gain popularity with others. The LORD is real. His righteousness and judgments are sure for all eternity. The Bible is a testimony of God’s eternal power and authority. We simply cannot sin in the ways of this world and imagine that, “We are delivered!”
Following the “abominations” of this world only leads to eternal damnation. There is no getting around that. So, we need to open up our Bibles and learn God’s ways.
If we don’t love and care about truth, we are condemning ourselves — as many in this world are doing.
Seeing God’s righteousness in His word, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, thank You for your faithful righteousness.”
Love,
Margaret
