Come Now, You Who Say,

Come Now, You Who Say,

People like  to boast  about all they have done  —  and all they plan  to do.     They talk  like they are a success  in their endeavor  before they even get started.     Whether they plan  to be a star musician,  movie star,  the owner of a business, sports hero,  or whatever,  their plan is  to be the greatest.

It is fine  to have high ideals  and hopes  that lead us  to work hard to achieve good.     But,  in the same breath,  we are not to allow ourselves  to become prideful and boastful.     That is why James 4:13-17 says,

Come now,  you who say,  “Today or tomorrow  we will go  to such and such a city,  and spend a year there  and engage  in business  and make a profit.”     Yet  you do not know  what your life will be like  tomorrow.     You are just a vapor  that appears  for a little while  and then vanishes away.     Instead,  you ought to say,  “If the Lord wills,  we will live  and also do this  or that.”     But as it is,  you boast in your arrogance;  all such boasting  is evil.     Therefore,  to one  who knows the right thing  to do  and does not do it,  to him  it is sin.

For our own good,  God is in control  of our futures.     Much of the time,  we don’t know  what is best  for us  —  even though  we feel sure  we do know  what is best  for us.     God’s love and wisdom  are so far beyond  our imagination  that we truly can  entrust Him  with our whole futures.     We will experience trials  and tribulations,  but through it all,  we are  in God’s care.

Regarding every detail  of our lives  on earth,  Jesus said  in Luke 12:28,

But if God  so clothes  the grass  in the field,  which is alive today  and tomorrow is thrown  into the furnace,  how much more  will He clothe you?      You men  of little faith!

So,  in faith,  we let God guide  our ways,  and say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  Your blessings  and plans  for our lives are wonderful.”

Love,
Margaret
