My Thoughts Are Not Your Thoughts

My Thoughts Are Not Your Thoughts

How little we know  about God  —  and yet,  we can know everything  about Him  that is essential  to our eternal life.     We can never figure out  why God lets us  go through terrible trials  and testings.     We seem  to think we’re just fine  as we are  —  but God knows where,  how  and why  we need  to be refined,  so that we’ll turn out  like pure gold,  with great value.

We think  we understand ourselves  and think  we’re pretty good  in comparison  with the rest  of this wild world.     But,  God sees all the stuff  we don’t fess up to  —  even to ourselves.     We don’t want  to admit  to pride,  stubbornness,  hard heartedness,  judgmentalism, and a whole host  of other faults.

When God sees those things  in His beloved children,  He wants  to work  in their hearts,  minds,  and spirits  everything that will lead them  to a true salvation,  faith,  and purity  —  instead of trusting  in their own kind  of delusional  righteousness.

With the wickedness  we are all born with,  every time we do something wrong,  our first reaction is  to cover it up  —  hide it  —  say it doesn’t exist  —  or just  don’t talk about it.     We don’t want our sins revealed  because we’re awfully afraid  of the punishment  we deserve.

But,  God does not want us  to run away  from the truth  about ourselves.     God wants us  to take a long  and honest look at it  —  because an honest look  will draw us close  to God’s heart  and cause us  to ask for His forgiveness  and strength  to get up again  and live  for Him  in truth.

Here’s what Isaiah 55:6-9 tells us  about what God wants us  to do  when we sin  and why  we really need  to do it,  if we value  our eternal salvation.

Seek the LORD  while He may be found;
Call upon Him  while He is near.
Let the wicked  forsake his way,
And the unrighteous man  his thoughts;
And let him return  to the LORD,
And He will have compassion  on him;
And to our God,
For He will  abundantly pardon.

“For My thoughts  are not  your thoughts,
Neither are your ways  My ways,”  declares the LORD.
“For as the heavens  are higher  than the earth,
So are My ways  higher  than your ways,
And My thoughts  than your thoughts.”

We think  we understand  so much  when we try  to hide our sins.     But God is telling us  we don’t understand  His fatherly love  and desire  to forgive  and cleanse us  in Christ.    We need  to be clean  and only God  can cleanse us.     God’s wisdom  and love  are so much greater  than we  can ever imagine  —  they cannot be compared  to any human wisdom  or love.     We must  trust it.

In dealing with people,  we expect  to see a bit of stupidity  here and there  (just like  with ourselves),  and we expect human love  to fail  in times of weakness.     But,  when dealing with God,  it is totally different.    As the Almighty LORD,  who is our heavenly Father,  God’s wisdom  and love  are far above  our imagination.     Drawing near  to God  is nothing like  drawing near  to a person.

Consequently,  we do need  to be consciously forsaking  the wickedness  of our human natures  and turning back  to our LORD,  so that He may graciously  be forgiving us  and strengthening us  as we look  to our Savior  for support.

Instead of fearfully  running away  and not confessing  our sins,  we need  to be running back  to God  and showing Him  how we’ve gotten hurt  in yet another fall.     God wants  to gather us up  in His loving,  almighty arms  and comfort us  with the forgiveness  that Jesus earned  for us  on the cross.

Our heavenly Father’s ways  include forgiveness  in Christ.     His thoughts  are only thoughts  of love  and care.     We can trust Him  because He has proven His love  in Christ.

As we return  to our LORD every day,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank you  for forgiving us and taking care  of our every need.”
