You Thought That I was Just Like You
People have a way of interpreting God wrongly. An example was in the news the other day. A gangster, with many crimes to his credit, felt that he would go to heaven because he believed that there is a god — but he does not believe in Christ Jesus. He feels that he can now work his way into heaven.
His idea of God is just like what is described in Psalm 50. God described the wicked as hating discipline, disregarding God’s word, being pleased with thieves, speaking with evil deceit, slandering, etc. And then God says in Psalm 50:21-22,
These things you have done and I kept silence;
You thought that I was just like you;
I will reprove you and state the case in order before your eyes.Now consider this, you who forget God,
Or I will tear you in pieces, and there will be none to deliver.
When people are not punished immediately for their sins, they quickly assume that God is just like them — willing to accept all sorts of evils — and forget about their “waywardness“. These days, people think nothing of disregarding God’s word about Christ Jesus, our Savior. They think it’s okay to mock Jesus and Christians because nothing happens anyway when anyone does so. They see Christians have troubles just like everyone else, so they assume Christians are not special in God’s eyes.
But, for all the evils the people of this world accept, 2 Peter 3:8 has a warning,
But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.
God is patient and knows our every thought, feeling, and action. When Judgment Day comes, everyone will be judged according to God’s righteousness in Christ Jesus. Only those who believe and trust in Jesus will be forgiven and saved eternally. We dare not forget that. It’s the main message in God’s eternal word.
Putting our trust in God’s promises of forgiveness through faith in Christ, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, thank You for redeeming us through Jesus.”
Love,
Margaret
