The Life Was the Light of Men

The Life Was the Light of Men

The sunrise is  stunningly beautiful,  changing every second.     But,  much more everlastingly beautiful  than that  is John’s description  of Jesus.

He says  in John 1:1-5,

In the beginning  was the Word,  and the Word was with God,  and the Word  was God.     He was in the beginning  with God.      All things came into being  through Him;   and apart from Him  nothing came  into being  that has come into being.     In Him was life;  and the life  was the light of men.     And the light shines  in the darkness;  and the darkness  did not comprehend it.

Jesus is the Word.     Jesus is God — as John says, “the Word was God”.      There are no adequate words  to explain that,  because we are only human  and live on this earth  for a relatively very short time.     We don’t have minds  that can fully conceive  of the things  that are spiritual  and eternal.     Because Jesus is eternal,  He is God.     There is no other eternal.

Nobody can really explain eternity,  but eternity  has no beginning  and no end.     So,  when Jesus was  “in the beginning”,  that is from before  the beginning  of creation — and from before the beginning  of time  for all the created things  that now exist.

John says,  “All things came into being  through Him.”      So Jesus is the Creator  of all creation.      When John further says,  “and apart from Him  nothing came  into being  that has come  into being”,  he is again emphasizing  that fact  that Jesus is God.     Only God  created all things  and there is only one God.

Many people think of Jesus  only as a man,  who preached,  and who happened  to die  on a cross.     But,  He was so much more  than mere people could imagine.     The people had hated  and crucified  their very own Creator.     How could that be?

There is no scientific explanation  as we think of science.     Our minds  are so confined  to what we can see,  feel,  smell,  and taste,  that we cannot comprehend  the miracle  that took place  in Jesus’ suffering,  death,  and resurrection.     But,  just think,  it was all prophesied  through thousands of years  by many different prophets.     That is miraculous.

That shows eternal,  Almighty power  —  something we certainly don’t have.

When we experience  our one measly life  here on earth,  we might boast  about our power  to control some little thing  or person.     But,  our ability  to control something  is ridiculously puny,  when compared  to God’s power  to control.     That is why  it is so stupid  of people  to take pride  in what they think  they control.     We don’t have the power  to do anything  unless God grants it  to us  for a short time.

John further describes Jesus  by saying,  “In Him was life;  and the life  was the light of men.     And the light shines  in the darkness;  and the darkness  did not comprehend it.”

Jesus is so much more  than the Creator  of our physical life.     Jesus is the embodiment  of the spiritual life  we need  —  if we want  to be saved  from our sins  and live forever  in heaven.     In His resurrection,  Jesus proved  that He is God,  that He preached the truth  about our sins  and our need  for repentance.     So,  this spiritual life  Jesus gives us  is a light  for us.     It shows us  the beauty of holiness  and faith  in the living God.

So,  in that way,  Jesus is our light  in this dark world  of sin.     Jesus shows us  the way  to heaven  through faith.

If we only pay attention  to the influences  of this dark world,  we will never be able  to see the light  of the love of God.     The evil in this world knows  how to keep us  so occupied  with sinful living,  that we don’t have a clue  about the love  of God right  in front  of our noses,  where God is constantly trying  to get our attention.

Jesus (God Himself) preached the truths  of God,  but many  of the people  didn’t get it.     Many wanted to stay  in the dark corners  of their world,  because if they would go  into the light  of repentance,  they might look bad  in the eyes  of others.     Nobody wants to admit  that they’re a sinner,  who needs  to be washed  in the blood of Jesus.

The prideful evil  of this world  cannot comprehend  their need  to become humble  and learn  to depend  on their Creator,  Sustainer,  and Redeemer.

And life goes on…….

Do we want  to walk  in the light?     If you’re afraid,  how can stumbling around  in the dark  over the garbage  of our sins  possibly be  a better way to live?     How can the darkness  of our sins  ever lead us  to the eternal love  of God  that we claim we want?

We really need  to get  in the light.

When we do step  into the light  of God’s salvation  in Christ,  we will say,  “Hallelujah!     Because my LORD lives,  now I can really live!”

Love,
Margaret
