All Things Work Together

All Things Work Together

Sometimes there are so many different challenges  in our life — all at the same time —-that we can feel  a bit overwhelmed.     As the saying goes,  “When it rains — it pours.”

Paul spoke  to the Roman congregation  as they faced many sufferings  and wondered about the surety  of their salvation.     He wanted  to assure them  that their prayers  were pleasing  in God’s sight  and explained why.     In Romans 8:26-28  Paul says,

And in the same way  the Spirit also helps  our weakness;  for we do not know how  to pray  as we should,  but the Spirit Himself intercedes  for us  with groanings  too deep for words;  and He  who searches the hearts  knows what the mind  of the Spirit is,  because He intercedes  for the saints  according to the will  of God.

And we know  that God causes  all things  to work together  for good  to those who love God,  to those who are called  according to His purpose.

Many times a person isn’t sure  how they should pray.     We might feel inadequate  because of our sins — or maybe  we are not sure  what all is involved  in our problem — or we just don’t have the words  to explain  what is troubling us — maybe it’s about  a long-felt grief.     We might even be afraid  of what God thinks  about our problems.

Our whole earthly situation  makes us feel weak  and inadequate.     But,  Paul has reassuring words.     We don’t have to worry  because, “the Spirit Himself intercedes  for us  with groanings  too deep  for words.”

God’s love  for us  is so intimate  that the Holy Spirit knows exactly  what we want  to express — what we “need”  to express.     More than that,  the Holy Spirit intercedes  for us  with “groanings too deep  for words.”     That is an expression of love  far beyond anything here  on earth.     And it’s  on our behalf — just because  we have put our faith  in Jesus’ work  of love  on the cross.

God is all powerful  in knowing  our every thought  and feeling.     God knows our desires  before we even realize  we have that desire.     So when we lay our heart  before the LORD,  we don’t have to worry  about having the right words.     It doesn’t matter  if we don’t know all the details involved  in the problem.     And,  we don’t have to be afraid  because God’s love  for all His children  is eternal  and greater than anything  we can imagine.

That is what Paul is praying about  in Ephesians 3:16-19,  where he says,

that He would grant you,  according to the riches  of His glory,  to be strengthened  with power  through His Spirit  in the inner man;  so that Christ may dwell  in your hearts  through faith;  and that you,  being rooted  and grounded  in love,  may be able  to comprehend  with all the saints  what is the breadth  and length  and height  and depth,  and to know the love  of Christ  which surpasses knowledge,  that you may be  filled up  to all the fullness  of God.

That is a mouthful  of comfort  because all things  are possible  with God.     Nothing is impossible  with our LORD.    His love for us  is far beyond description,  but it is good  for us  to wonder  at the expanse  of it all.

So,  when Paul says, “we know  that God causes  all things  to work together  for good  to those  who love God,  to those  who are called  according to His purpose”,  we know  that we can depend  on our LORD  to work out everything  in a way  that will be  for our eternal good,  to strengthen our faith,  and form our character  to His glory — as we realize  more and more  the great depths  of His love  for us.

God’s answer  to our prayers  is always the very best answer  in the long run — better than our wildest imagination.     We may not understand it  at the time,  but we certainly do not  have to worry about it.     We can surely trust  whatever God allows,  as we always remember His love  in Christ  and give Him  the thanks  that is due  His holy name.

When we give thanks,  humbly trusting God’s  assured love,  God will work everything  into something  for our good.     Then,  we will stand  in awe  of His all-knowing love  and power,  and say,  “Hallelujah!     God’s answer is greater  than we ever  could have imagined.”
