We Write So That

We Write So That…

When a person has something special  to share,  they have an inner,  expectant joy,  but their joy  is not complete  until the job  of sharing  is done.     That is the way  the apostle John felt  as he wrote his first epistle.     So,  John says  in 1 John 1:1-4,

What was from the beginning,  what we have heard,  what we have seen  with our eyes,  what we beheld  and our hands handled,  concerning the Word  of Life  —  and the life  was manifested,  and we have seen  and bear witness  and proclaim to you  the eternal life,  which was  with the Father  and was manifested  to us  —  what we have seen  and heard  we proclaim  to you also,  that you also  may have fellowship  with us;  and indeed  our fellowship  is with the Father,  and with His Son  Jesus Christ.

And these things  we write,  so that our joy  may be made  complete.

John was so excited  about the reality  of Jesus Christ  —  true God  and true Man  —  come down  to this earth  to be our Savior.     He was excited  and honored  because he was actually granted the privilege  of being a disciple  for three years.

For three years  he got to be near Jesus  and learn  from Him.     He actually touched  the Word of Life  and learned  that Jesus truly is  the Resurrection  and the Life.     John got to witness  all the miracles  that Jesus performed  and even got to see Jesus  after His resurrection.     That honor  held John  in awe  for the rest  of his life.     He had been  just a lowly fisherman.     But,  Jesus chose him  to be a disciple.     What a change  in his life!

You don’t just keep quiet  about this sort  of thing.     This is awesome  beyond compare.

And so,  John just had  to preach  and write,  because he was overflowing  with awe  and love  for all  that God had done  for all the people  in the world.     John’s gospel  and three epistles  were written  while he was free  to go where ever he wanted.     But,  later on,  he was exiled  to the tiny island  of Patmos  for his bold preaching.     That didn’t stop him  from writing.     While in exile,  he had the vision  that is recorded  in the book  of Revelation.     So,  he had to write  about that also  for our comfort  and our joy.

John wrote  because all Christians  have a special fellowship  “with the Father,  and with His Son  Jesus Christ”.     That fellowship  gave John  the joy  to continue sharing the gospel,  even during hardships  and persecutions  and exile.

John wants us  to share that fellowship  with him  by reading God’s word  from cover to cover  and glorying  in the greatness  of God’s love  for each  and every one  of us  as an individual.

As we study God’s word  and stand in awe  of the greatness  of His love  for us,  we will say,  “Hallelujah!     The LORD God Almighty  has given  even me  His word  of salvation.”

Love,
Margaret
