Imitators of God

Imitators of God

People have a tendency  to imitate people they like.      Whether it be a parent,  teacher,  sports star,  movie star,  a favorite professional,  dear friend,  or whoever  —  we see characteristics  that are impressive,  and we want  to be just like that.     Children love playing “grown-up”  and note  a “grown-up’s” mannerisms,  speech habits,  way of walking,  or activity,  and try  to copy that.

That can be embarrassing,  if they publicly imitate a trait  that a grown-up  is ashamed of.

Since even grown-ups tend  to imitate the people  around them,  in order  to fit into their community  and feel  like they belong  —  Paul noticed  that the Ephesian Christians  were imitating the sinful behaviors  that were in their community.

Some might have been afraid  of living  like a true Christian  in their heathen community.     They didn’t want  to stick out  like a sore thumb.     So,  they had problems  leaving their old habits  of lust,  deceit,  falsehood,  anger,  stealing,  foul language,  bitterness,  malice,  coarse jesting,  and greed.

In love,  Paul wanted them  to compare their old life style  with the teachings  of Christ,  that they had come  to know  —  and admit the absolute goodness  of God’s way.     It was the difference  between night  and day.

So,  in Ephesians 5:1-2,  Paul writes,

Therefore,  be imitators  of Godas beloved children;  and walk  in love,  just as Christ also  loved you,  and gave Himself up  for us,  an offering  and a sacrifice  to God  as a fragrant aroma.

Instead of fearfully trying  to fit in  with the world  around us,  let us look  to the power  and love  of our LORD  —  and trust  that He will care  for us (His children)  as we imitate  our heavenly Father’s goodness  and love.

Then  we will have the joy  of imitating  what is good  and right  and beautiful,  and say,  “Hallelujah!     There is peace  in living  as our heavenly Father  wants us  to live.”

Love,
Margaret
