Lovingkindness and Truth

Lovingkindness and Truth

King David wrote Psalm 61,  in which he fervently prayed  in verse 7,

Appoint lovingkindness  and truth,  that they may  preserve him.

In this psalm,  David is very concerned  about staying true  to the God  of his salvation.    He was anxious  about always remaining  in a close relationship  with the LORD.     David realized  that if he were  to go off  and live his life  like the rest  of this world,  he could lose  God’s companionship  and the gift  of eternal life.

Staying close  to God  all of our lives  is vital.    God is our lifeline,  and David knew it.     And so,  his heartfelt prayer is  that God would give him  two things  to help preserve his life  with God.    David asked  that God give him lovingkindness  and truth.

We all really need  the lovingkindness  of our LORD  —  His mercy,  His favor,  His kindness.     If it were not  for God’s mercy,  none of us  could ever be saved.     With God’s lovingkindness  we will receive guidance  through temptations,  comfort in our trials,  hope in the promises  of God,  remembrance  of all God’s powerful works  throughout history,  faith  in God’s ongoing love  for us.

All these things  will help preserve us  throughout this life  and lead us  to eternal life.

And then,  David also prayed  for God’s truth.     Just as  there are many false preachers today,  trying to get us  to follow them so they can rule over people  and become rich,  there were many false preachers  and religions  in David’s day.     People will always be  in need  of God’s truth  —  the only real truth.     It is part and parcel  with our eternal salvation.

There simply is no salvation  outside of the truth  of the salvation  that is received  through faith  in what Jesus Christ  has already done  for us  on the cross  —  the total forgiveness  of all our sins  and the gift  of eternal life.

False preachers  will paint this over  with all sorts  of lies  about God’s word.     We need  to notice  that they always point more  to themselves  and their requirements  than they do  to the power  of what God has already done  for us  in Jesus.     If we were  to believe  their false preaching,  we would lose our gift  of free salvation  through faith  in Christ alone.     Just as with David,  we too,  need to pray  that God would grant us  His lovingkindness  and truth, so that they  may preserve us  as they preserved David.

Then  as we rest  in the joy  of God’s love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Our Lord’s mercy  and truth  keep us safe  in His loving arms,  so that we  may sing His praises  eternally.”

Love,
Margaret
