With All Diligence

In Proverbs,  a father is instructing  his beloved son  about life.     This father is so urgent  and pleading  in everything he teaches  his dear son.     He does not want his son  to be a failure  in the things  that pertain  to a happy life  on earth  and eternal life  in heaven.     So,  in Proverbs 4:5-6,  speaking of wisdom,  he says,

Acquire wisdom!     Acquire understanding!
Do not forget,  nor turn away  from the words  of my mouth.
Do not forsake her,  and she will  guard you;
Love her,  and she will  watch over you.

Then,  when Job and his friends  were discussing all the troubles  we come across  in this world  and how we can’t figure it out,  Job said  in Job 28:28,

Behold,  the fear  of the Lord,  that is wisdom;
And  to depart  from evil  is understanding.

So,  Proverbs is telling us  that if we stick  to a true wisdom  in this world  of trials and temptations,  then, wisdom will  watch over us  and guard us,  so that we don’t get hurt  by all the foolishness  that fills this world.

Then,  when Job tells us  that “the fear of the Lord”  is wisdom”,  he’s saying  the smartest thing  we can do  in this world  is to have a healthy respect  for God  — a respect  that actually leads us  to live  according to His word.     An honest respect  for the Lord  will lead one  to want to be obedient  to God’s wisdom,  because we know  that God is the one  who truly knows  what is best  for us  —  and He is the one  who truly cares  for us.

If we honestly pay attention  to the wisdom  of God,  we will gain  a true understanding.     That true understanding  of what this life  is all about  will open our eyes  to actually see  the grossness  of evil.     Seeing the grossness  of evil  will make us  get away from it  and not want  to take part in it  any more.

It is  in that realization  that wisdom  is guarding us  and watching over us,  so we won’t get bamboozled  by the ways  of this world.

It is with all this  in mind,  the pleading father  then tells his son  in Proverbs 4:23,

Watch over your heart  with all diligence,
For from it  flow the springs  of life.

If we make sure  that way deep down  in our hearts  is the wisdom  and understanding  that come from our heavenly Father,   then God’s wisdom  will guard  and protect us,  so that we won’t lose our eternal life  through the foolishness  of this world.

It’s no wonder  that the  father was pleading  with his son.     He wanted his son  to have an eternal life  worth living.

As we carefully  and diligently  watch over our hearts,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Take my life  and let it be  consecrated,  Lord, to Thee.     Take my moments  and my days,  let them flow  in ceaseless praise.”

Love,
Margaret
