Grace to Help in Time of Need

Hebrews 4:14-16

Since then  we have a great high priest  who has passed through the heavens,  Jesus the Son  of God,  let us hold fast  our confession.

For we do not have a high priest  who cannot sympathize  with our weaknesses,  but one who has been tempted  in all things  as we are,  yet without sin.

Let us therefore  draw near  with confidence  to the throne of grace,   that we may receive mercy  and may find grace to help  in time  of need.

There are so many times  we really need help,  but we do not go  to the right source  to ask for it.    We have sins  that weigh us down  —  that we need  to get rid of  —  but,  we are not confident  that God will forgive us.     We just don’t feel worthy  of full forgiveness.     It doesn’t seem possible.

In shame,  we don’t dare  to ask Jesus  to forgive us.     The writer  of Hebrews is saying  we should not feel that way  for a very simple reason.    Our High Priest  ( the One who has the power  to grant forgiveness )  is Jesus  and He was tempted  in every way  that all humans are tempted.     But,  He never once sinned,  like we do.

Jesus’ pure  and perfect life  on earth  gives Him the power  to know exactly  what we are going through  with all our temptations  and He has the ability  to thoroughly forgive everyone  who asks Him  for forgiveness.     Jesus’ experience  makes Him willing  to forgive us all.

For that very reason,  we are able  to approach His throne  of grace  and ask Him boldly  for the mercy  we so desperately need  —  and for His gracious help  in overcoming the temptations  we face.     This is exactly why  Jesus was willing  to suffer  and die  to pay  for our sins.     He wants us  to come to Him  for the forgiveness  and grace we need.     His resurrection is proof  that He has the power  and authority  to truly forgive.

But,  just how often  do we honestly ask  for forgiveness?

Jesus is God Almighty  and it is a shame  that we do not approach His throne  of grace  every day  as we should.     To approach Jesus’ throne  of grace  is to honor Him  for all the love  and sacrifice  He has given us.     If we don’t appreciate Jesus’ forgiveness enough  to ask for it  every day,  that is dishonoring the love  of God.

As we honor our Lord and Savior  by acknowledging  that He alone  has the power  to forgives all  of our sins,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for giving us  a real  and eternal salvation  through all  that You have done  on our behalf.”

Love,
Margaret
