Always Being Ready…
As we live amongst so many that scoff the Christian faith and wonder about their mockery of us, we listen to Peter as he gave instructions to the Christians facing the persecutions of the early church — persecutions like being thrown into jail, beaten, stoned, or even thrown to the lions. In 1 Peter 3:15, Peter instructs us, saying,
Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to every one who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence…
Faith in Christ really does seem like such a silly thing to those who do not understand the seriousness of their sinful natures and the reality of heaven and hell. Such a faith is just plain ol’ dumb to those who don’t realize that the Bible actually proves it’s truthfulness by the prophecies that were written hundreds and thousands of years before they were fulfilled in the one man, Jesus Christ — not to mention prophecies about other historical happenings.
So, when these people doubt our sanity and intelligence, we need to be ready to talk to them about why we believe the way we do. We can be much more ready to talk about our faith when we take time daily to study God’s word and meditate on how we can apply it to our personal lives.
That does not mean that the unbeliever will be amazed and suddenly come to a true faith the moment we defend the truth. But, it might give them something to think about as they search for meaning in their lives. We do need to pray for them, that they would come to know the truth and that the truth would set them free.
Peter makes another very significant point in the verse above. He said we should all “Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts”. If Christ is considered holy in our hearts, it will show in our outward living and help us to “make a defense to every one who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you.”
As we witness our faith and live it, we say, “Hallelujah! Christ Jesus, You are our righteousness and You alone justify us in spite of all our sins. May all our living be for You.”
Love,
Margaret
