He Is at My Right Hand

December 2, 2017

He Is at My Right Hand

King David did something really worth noting  in Psalm 16:8.     It is probably why God said  David was a man  “after His own heart”.      David says,

I have set the LORD  continually  before me;
Because  He is at my right hand,  I will not be shaken.

What did David do  when he set the LORD continually before him?     He actually did  quite a bit.    David cared enough  about God’s word  to study it  and set it up  as his number one guide  through this life.     He meditated  on what God said  in an effort  to understand  the Lord’s goodness  and ways.

David not only believed  what God said  in His word,  he trusted it implicitly.    With this trust  in God’s holiness  and love, David was assured  that God was always  at his right hand  —  right next to him  every single day.

As the king of Israel,  David faced  all sorts of huge challenges,  but he was not all shook up  about them  because God  was by his side  helping him.

And why was God  always by David’s side  helping him?

Because David  set the LORD  continually before him.

What does this have  to say  to us?     We need  to set the LORD continually  before us  through the study  of His word,  meditation,  prayer,  faith,  trust,  obedience,  and the like.     Then,  we too  will be a people  after God’s own heart  —  just like David.

We can read  about the circumstances  surrounding God’s statement  about David  in 1 Samuel 13:1-14  and in Psalm 89:1-52.     Then,  Paul makes reference  to these Old Testament accounts  in Acts 13:22, where he says,

“He  [God]  raised up David  to be their king,  concerning whom He also testified  and said,  ‘I have found David  the son  of Jesse,  a man  after My heart,  who will do  all My will.'”

Willing to do God’s will  —  that’s what it means  to set the LORD  continually before us  —   and that’s what leads God  to stand  at our right hand,  so that we don’t have  to be shaken  as we face  our challenges.

With God  at our right hand,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     I love You,  O LORD,  my strength.     The LORD  is my rock  and my fortress  and my deliverer.     I call  upon the LORD,  who is worthy  to be praised,  and am saved  from my enemies.”
