A Day in Thy Courts Is Better

December 4, 2017

A Day in Thy Courts Is Better

Psalm 84:10

For a day  in Thy courts  is better  than a thousand outside.
I would rather stand  at the threshold  of the house  of my God,
Than dwell  in the tents of wickedness.

The person who wrote this psalm claims  that a single day  in the courts  of the LORD  is far better  than a thousand days outside.     That’s quite a comparison.     We need  to know more  about what he is saying.

The “courts” of the LORD  are evidently where we go  to be with God  in His house.     Is the psalmist talking  about heaven  or a church?     This psalmist gives us some clues  in verses 1-4, where he sings,

How lovely  are Thy dwelling places,
O LORD of hosts!
My soul longed  and even yearned  for the courts  of the LORD;
My heart  and my flesh sing  for joy  to the living God.
The bird also  has found a house,
And the swallow a nest  for herself,  where she may lay  her young,
Even Thine altars,  O LORD  of hosts,
My King  and my God.
How blessed  are those  who dwell  in Thy house!
They are ever praising Thee.

Just where does God live?     Paul asks us  in 1 Corinthians 3:16,

“Do you not know  that you are a temple  of God,  and that the Spirit  of God  dwells in you?”

The apostle John backs that up  by quoting Jesus  in John 14:23,

Jesus answered  and said to him,  “If anyone loves Me,  he will keep My word;  and My Father  will love him,  and We will come  to him,  and make Our abode  with him.”

So,  God lives  in the people  who love Him  and keep His word.     To keep His word is  to have faith  and trust  in God’s power and desire  to save us.     Believing hearts  are God’s dwelling places — His courts.

The psalmist says  that these believing hearts  are doing something  as God lives  in them.    He says,  They are ever praising Thee.”     When we put our trust  in the love  of God,  we know  that He will work everything  for our good  in the end.     That is why  we are able  to praise the LORD,  even as we face tribulations.

The whole point is  that even when our faith is weak  and the world is trying  to smash our faith  to smithereens,  we need  to look  to our Lord  who lives in us  and praise Him  for His faithful love  and care.

As the psalmist said,  it is much better  to be in the courts  of the LORD  than to dwell  with the wicked,  who are constantly  bitterly complaining,  cursing,  and blaspheming the LORD.     Can we see the differences here?     Which place  of “being”  is better?

As we look up  to our LORD  and praise Him  for wanting  to live  in us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  You are so gracious  and loving  to even desire  to want to live  in us.     We praise  and exalt  Your love  and salvation.”
