They Go from Strength to Strength

December 5, 2017

They Go from Strength to Strength

            Psalm 84:5-7

How blessed is the man  whose strength is  in Thee;
In whose heart  are the highways  to Zion!
Passing through the valley  of Baca,  they make it  a spring,
The early rain also covers it  with blessings
They go  from strength  to strength,
Every one  of them appears  before God  in Zion.

According to Psalm 84,  it’s a very blessed person  who lets God  be his strength  and who has a heart intent  on living  in God’s way.     That blessed person  will have to pass “through the valley  of Baca”   meaning the valley  of tears  and much weeping.

That’s saying  some really sad things  will happen  in this person’s life,  but he will refuse  to allow the sadness  of his situation  overcome him.     It says, “they make it a spring.”     In other words,  these blessed people look  for all the good  in their troubles  and realize  that these challenges  are opportunities  from God  to grow  in faith,  hope  and love.     They trust  that God will work  all things  for their good  in the end,  so they don’t let these problems  take away their hope  in the LORD.

When the psalmist says,  “They go  from strength  to strength”,  he is saying  they let each of their problems  build strength  in their faith,  so that when they face  the next problem,  they remember  how God strengthened them  and carried them  through their previous problems.     That remembrance  then strengthens them  to meet new challenges  —  all the while trusting  in God  to meet their needs  as He did before.

With such a dependence  on God’s love  and grace,  it is comforting  to know  that “Every one of them  appears  before God  in Zion.”

Faith in God,  trust in God’s love,  and remembrance  of God’s ways  in the past  —  along with a very joyfully grateful  and thankful heart  —  all lead  to the utmost joy  anyone could ever know  as they get to appear  before God  in Zion  —  eternal life.

As we face  our challenges  with joyful hearts  that trust  in God’s ways  for us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  ever so much  for being our strength  from day to day.”
