Seeking Someone to Devour

December 8, 2017

Seeking Someone to Devour

We are being hunted.     And all too often,  we’re not even aware enough  to realize it.     But if we were  to go hunting  for game,  the wild life we’re after  is often wary enough  and smart enough  to escape us.    They are always  on the lookout  for predators trying  to get them.

It is when they are constantly aware  of their surroundings  and assessing their situation  that they have a chance  to escape their predators.     Just a bare scent  of their predator  will set them  on the run.     To escape  means life.

Our instincts for survival need  to kick in  as we are being hunted.     Sadly,  many people have no clue  about the danger they’re in.     They succumb  to the devil’s every temptation  without even a whimper  and don’t realize  that they are headed  for eternal death.

People become so accustomed  to sin all around them  day after day,  that they don’t even think it’s dangerous  any more.      We see everyone else sinning  and don’t even notice  that they are spiritually dying  or dead.     They aren’t really enjoying life.     Inside,  they are lost.    Even though they outwardly seem  to be getting along okay  in this world,  their lives are futile  and they know it.     They just don’t know how  to escape the futility  of their sins.

1 Peter 5:8-9 wants us  to come to our senses  and not be so naive  about the results  of our mindless sins.    He says,

Be of sober spirit,  be on the alert.     Your adversary,  the devil,  prowls about  like a roaring lion,  seeking someone  to devour.

But resist him,  firm in your faith,  knowing  that the same experiences  of suffering  are being accomplished  by your brethren  who are in the world.

The sin that tempts us is  no different  than the sin that tempts everyone  in this world.    So,  we don’t have to feel  like our life is any harder  than anyone else’s life.     The difference is that  some people  cave in  to every temptation  and others are alert enough  to recognize their enemy  and resist him.     We need the sensibility  to resist sin  and face the truths  we have learned about God,  our Savior.

We all suffer in this sinful world,  but with God  it is not hopeless,  so we need  to buck up.     By faith,  we have God beside us  and He has promised  to never leave us.      Peter spoke  from experience  when he wrote  in 1 Peter 5:10,

And after you have suffered  for a little,  the God of all grace,  who called you  to His eternal glory  in Christ,  will Himself  perfectconfirmstrengthen  and establish you.

That’s God’s promise.     As we put our faith  and hope  in our Lord,  He will surely carry us  through whatever kind  of suffering and temptation  that comes our way.     Totally alert,  we need to recognize sin  for what it is  —  the devil seeking  to devour us.

If we give up  and purposely  and faithlessly  let sin and temptation  conquer us,  we are the one  at fault  for losing eternal life.     God is willing  to help us  every single time  we look to Him  for help.     The question remains:   are we willing  to look  to our Lord  for help?     He has promised  to perfectconfirmstrengthen  and establish  us when we trust  in His love.

With that kind  of loving help,  we don’t have an excuse.     God is our heavenly Father  and He can always  be trusted.      Let’s trust Him  and live according to His word.     We will be  eternally glad  we did.

As we allow our Lord  to strengthen us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  You are ever faithful  through all our weaknesses.      Thank You.”

P.S.     The picture above is  of the Praying Mantis we had  as a pet  for one winter  a number of years ago.     Her name was Jadette.    I would feed her warmed,  raw meat  on a toothpick.    She laid a number of egg cases  on one of our house plants  and I tied them  in the bushes outside  where they hatched  in the spring.
