Draw Near to God

James 4:8-10

Draw near  to God  and He will  draw near  to you.     Cleanse your hands,  you sinners;  and purify your hearts,  you double-minded.     Be miserable  and mourn  and weep;  let your laughter  be turned into mourning,  and your joy  to gloom.

Humble yourselves  in the presence  of the Lord,  and He will  exalt you.

This is a promise straight  from the LORD.     Many passages  throughout the Bible  express this same thought.

Illustrated throughout God’s word  is a sinful people  (that’s us),  who think  we want  to “draw near to God”.     But,  in the same breath,  we complain  that God does not answer our prayers  and that God does not  draw near  to us.

There can be many different scenarios  in which it seems  that God has left us  and is refusing  to answer our prayers  —  but,  when we love  and trust  our Lord,  He will cause  all things  to work  for our good  in the end.     That is a fact  we can trust.

James 4:8-10 is referring  to a situation  in which people want God  to answer their prayers,  but,  they also want  to live  in their own way  —  not God’s way.    That is why James  is calling them  “sinners” and “double-minded”.

James is showing  that if any of us  honestly wants  to draw near to God”,  we need  to first of all  humble ourselves  in repentance.     We need  to see ourselves  as the sinners  we are.     And,  we need  to see the Lord  as the holy,  all-powerful,  eternal,  God Almighty,  our Savior,  our Judge,  our King,  and our heavenly Father.

We are not in the position  of telling God  what to do.    Rather,  as our loving,  heavenly Father,  God instructs us  in how we are  to live.     He alone  is all-wise.     And,  we need  to respectfully pay attention  and willingly obey.     We are not  to arrogantly live  in open rebellion  against God  and think that  if He  “really”  loves us  He will do everything  we ask,  in our time frame.

The point  throughout God’s word  is that He will surely draw near  to absolutely everyone  who comes  to Him  with a humble, repentant heart.     That is a promise.     We can trust God  to keep all of His promises  because He is holy.

We are the ones  who so easily become “double-minded”.     We need  to keep a constant watch  on our hearts  and minds.     That means  diligently checking out  what we are really thinking  and feeling.     Are we  in line  with God’s word  or not?     If not,  we need  to ask  for God’s forgiveness  for Jesus’ sake,  and pray  that our Lord  would guide us  in His ways.

With such a humble heart,  God will certainly  draw near  to us.

As we abide  in our Lord  and He abides  in us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  You are ever faithful,  forgiving,  and true  to Your word.     Thank you.”

Love,
Margaret
