The Deceiver and the Antichrist

2 John 6-8

And this is love,  that we walk  according to His commandments.     This is the commandment,  just as you have heard  from the beginning,  that you should walk  in it.

For many deceivers  have gone out  into the world,  those who do not acknowledge  Jesus Christ  as coming  in the flesh.     This is the deceiver  and the antichrist.

Watch yourselves,  that you might not lose  what we have accomplished,  but that you may receive  a full reward.

Jesus gave us this commandment that we have “heard from the beginning”.     What is it  that we are supposed to do?     In John 6:29  Jesus said,

This is the work  of God,  that you believe  in Him  whom He has sent.

That’s it.     God sent Jesus Christ  to this earth  to suffer and die  as the full payment  for all  of our sins.     Our job  is to believe.     God does not promise  that it will be  an easy job.     Instead  He warns us  that we will be surrounded  by many deceivers  and antichrist,  who will be constantly prowling  around us,  looking for every chance  they can get  to make us fall  from the true faith.

Deceivers do not wear tee shirts boldly saying,  “I’m a deceiver.    I’m going  to tear your faith  to shreds.”

Instead,  deceivers are anything  (people,  books,  movies,  political correctness,  educational courses,  etc. )  insinuating that we are stupid  and just not  “with it”  if we really put  our faith  in Jesus.     If we want  to be  in the “in crowd”  and have “friends”,  we are expected  to loosen up our morals.     If we want  a good grade  in a college course,  we are expected  to be in agreement  with liberal standards.     If we want a job,  we are expected  to accept all lifestyles  as good.

It’s social pressure  in many different forms  that insinuates faith  in Jesus  is just dumb.     Movies,  books,  the Internet,  etc. don’t even have to come right out  and say faith  in Jesus  is stupid.     All they do is glorify ungodliness  to the point  where people think  this is the way  we should be.     They simply crowd God out  with all their activity.     With God out,  unbelief sneaks in.

And,  you don’t even know  how it happened.     It’s just that  one day you find yourself  mocking the idea  of faith  in Jesus.     And so,  John warns,  “Watch yourselves,  that you might not lose  what we have accomplished,  but that you may receive  a full reward.”

There were just as many deceivers  out and about  in John’s day  as there are today.    They tried  to break down John’s faith  by exiling him  to the tiny island of Patmos.     It didn’t work.    Christians in that day  were being killed  and tortured  in many ways.     But,  they joyfully  kept the true faith.

In whatever kinds  of trials  and pressures  we face each day  that try to tear down  our faith,  we need to check out the facts  in God’s word  and see for ourselves  that down through the ages  God’s word  always comes true.      God is the Eternal One  who will be  our Judge.     His truth  is what we need  to be faithful to  because all this world  will pass away.     Whatever is gnawing  at our faith today  will be destroyed  in the end.

Let us do the work  of God  and believe  in the forgiveness  available only in Jesus Christ.     Let us strive  for our full reward.

As we allow God  to strengthen us  in His word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  Your love  and sacrifice  for us are marvelous beyond words.”

Love,
Margaret
