Rest in the LORD

Psalm 37:7-9

Rest in the LORD  and wait patiently  for Him;
Fret not yourself  because of him  who prospers  in his way,
Because of the man  who carries out  wicked schemes.
Cease from anger,  and forsake wrath;
For evildoers  will be cut off,
But those  who wait  for the LORD,  they will inherit the land.

King David wrote this Psalm  from experience.     Besides enemies  in surrounding countries,  he had enemies  in Israel  —  people who thought  they would be a better king  than David,  even though they knew  David had been chosen  by God.

These Israelite enemies  would concoct lies,  do sneaky things  that put David  in difficult situations,  and even gather others  to help overthrow  David’s throne.     It was a never ending struggle  to deal  with these enemies within.     Their hatred  of David  was based on jealousy,  a desire for power,  and no respect  for the LORD.

There was nothing  David could do  to change the evil  in their hearts  —  just as there is nothing  a Christian can do  to change the evil  in the hearts  of those  who do not love the LORD.     As with the Israelites  in David’s day,  they knew the word  of God,  but that knowledge  did not affect their hearts  or attitudes.      Their unbelief  led them  to try and work  against God’s known will.

In all  of this turmoil,  David realized  that God is the one  who rules.     He is the one  who “causes all things  to work together  for good  to those who love God,  to those who are called  according to His purpose.”     (Romans 8:28)

As we trust  in the LORD’s ways,  we can rest in the LORD  and wait patiently  for Him”.     In His own good time,   God will work  all things together  for the good  of His beloved children.     Our job is  to trust and obey,  while acting  in a godly manner.

As we remember  how God has dealt  with His children  since the beginning of time  ( a bit of Bible study would help ),   we can let our hearts  and minds rest  in the power  of His love  and faithfulness.     Then we will say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord and Savior,  thank You  for loving us  so wondrously  in all Your holy ways.”

Love,
Margaret
