In Repentance and Rest

In Repentance and Rest

Isaiah 30:15

For thus the Lord GOD,  the Holy One of Israel,  has said,
In repentance  and rest  you shall be saved,
In quietness  and trust  is your strength.”

Our natural reaction  to all the turmoil  in this world  is very opposite  of what God desires  for us.     We naturally want  to take everything  into our own hands  and power,  and try to force  our desires  onto our circumstances.     But,  since we are sinful beings  and lack the ability  to control  all sorts of factors,  our efforts are puny  and useless  in God’s eyes.

We might as well be fighting  our shadow.     And,  until we turn  to our LORD  in repentance,  rest,  quietness  and trust,  we are simply fighting  our shadow.

God knows  our sinful efforts  are useless.     As our loving heavenly Father,  He quietly invites us  to repent  of all our faithless ways  and just rest  in His almighty arms  —  giving in  to all His goodness.     It is when we repent  that God is able  to save us  from our sinful strivings.     When we put  all our turmoils  in the Lord’s lap,  then we can rest  in His fatherly love  for us.

We might feel  we have to take everything  into our own hands,  but God says,  “Please don’t.”     We are not strong  when we are “going it”  alone,  trying to do everything  our way.     God promises us strength  when we learn  to quiet down  and trust  in His ways.

When we repent,  we are turning away  from our sinful inclinations  and following the Lord’s desire  for our lives.     All of God’s ways  are explained  throughout His word  and can be summed up  as living  by faith,  hope,  and love  —  the kind of love  God has  for His dear children.

Jesus spoke  of the rest  He wants  to give us  in Matthew 11:28-30,

Come to Me,  all who are weary  and heavy-laden,  and I will give you rest.    Take My yoke  upon you,  and learn  from Me,   for I am gentle  and humble  in heart;  and you shall find rest  for your souls.    For My yoke  is easy,  and My load  is light.

As we cast our burdens  on our Lord  and rest  in His forgiving love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  Your yoke  really is easy  and Your load  really is light.”
