While I Have My Being

While I Have My Being

Life on earth is relatively short  —  especially  in consideration  of eternity.     We get so centered  on the here and now  that it’s hard  to imagine anything else.     That’s not a good idea,  because we’re getting all riled up  on what will  soon be gone.

It is eternity  that should be getting our attention  and guiding our living.     All the riches  that we gather  on this earth  cannot be taken  with us  when we die,  so they are just temporary things.     All our strengths  and powers  will be nothing  the moment we die.     And all our troubles  on earth  will be as nothing  in eternity,  so it is important  to see them as trials  that should draw us closer  to the reality  of our Maker  and Redeemer  for the help we need.

Since the LORD  is the one  who made all things  in heaven  and on earth  —  and He alone  is the one  who has the power  to say  where we will spend eternity  —  and  because it is the LORD  who blesses each and every one of us  with what we need  —  it is only right  and good  that we acknowledge that  throughout our short lives here.

The psalmist had this  in mind  when he just had to lift up his voice  in praise  in Psalm 146:1-2,

Praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD,  O my soul!
I will praise  the LORD  while I live;
I will sing praises  to my God  while I have my being.

If we don’t want  to praise the LORD  while we still have our being here  on earth,  then we need  to do some soul searching  as to why not  —  before it is  too late.     Do we have the power  to create all the universes  that exist?     Do we have the power  to prophesy  over thousands of years  and have all our words  come true?     Do we have the power  to wash away sins  as if they never existed?     Do we have the power  to know all the thoughts,  feelings,  and deeds  of every single person  that has ever lived,  so that we will be the just Judge  of all things  in the end?

The reality  of a higher power  and an eternal future needs  to guide our whole being.      While we still have our being,  we need to see  how God wants us  to be  on this earth.     We need  to see His plan  of eternal salvation  for those  who love His name  and honor Him  in faith.     We need  to see God’s sacrificial love  in sending Jesus  to suffer and die  to pay  for all our sins.     And  we need  to show some appreciation  for this gift  of love  that is being offered  to us.

As we open our eyes  to the reality  of God’s love  and salvation  in this troubled world,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  while I still have my being,  I will sing your praises.     I will praise You forever  and ever  for Your wondrous love  and salvation.”

Love,
Margaret
