A Jealous God

January 30, 2018

A Jealous God

It’s an amazing truth!     The LORD God Almighty  is very jealous  of our love.    Can you imagine that?     It’s true.     There are many Bible verses  that state that.    One reference is  in Deuteronomy 4:23-24,  where Moses is talking  to the Israelites.    He says,

So watch yourselves,  lest you forget the covenant  of the LORD your God,  which He made  with you,  and make for yourselves  a graven image  in the form  of anything  against which the LORD your God  has commanded you.

For the LORD your God  is a consuming fire,  a jealous God.

Why is God so jealous  for us?

God bought us  for His own  when He suffered and died  on the cross  to pay  for all our sins.    Because His love  for us  caused Him  to want to pay  for our sins  —  knowing that we could not pay  for them  —  He wants us  to love Him  for all the love  He has given us.

After He has died  for our sins  and proven His love,  how can we not love Him  in return?

And God is jealous  for our trust.     Because of His proven love,  He does not want us  to trust more  in mankind,  science,  other religions,  knowledge,  or anything else,  more than we trust Him.     We should not be trusting  an earthly “friend”  (who can be very wishy-washy)  more than we trust God Almighty.

God is even very jealous  of the company  we keep.    Do we “prefer”  hanging out with people  who despise our Lord  —  rather than spending time  with the Lord  by studying His word  and talking  to Him  in prayer?     How can we expect God  to even want  to be our Friend,  if we can’t stand  to spend time  being His friend?    But,  He still keeps on  wooing us,  even though we’re so stubborn  in our sins.

Because God’s love  for us  is so faithful,  He will even send trials  and tribulations  our way  to help us learn  to turn  to Him  in prayer  and realize  that He is our only hope  for help  and our only real love.    There is nothing  in the world  that can love us  as deeply and truly  as the Lord loves us.

It is a good thing  that God is jealous  for us  —  so jealous  that He’ll even send troubles our way  to cause us  to turn  to Him.     If God didn’t love us  that much,  none of us  could ever be saved.

So,  in our every little problem  and challenge,  let us constantly turn  to the living God  in prayer  and loving companionship.     He wants us  to stay close  to His heart  so that we’ll be safe  and secure  in this world  of many temptations  and lures.

As we walk  in friendship  with our Savior,  we say,  “Hallelujah!      Lord,  Your love  is so kind and faithful.     Thank You  for Your patience  with with each of us!”
