The LORD Longs

January 31, 2018

The LORD Longs

Israel was in deep,  deep trouble.     Because of all their sins,  God sent Isaiah  to preach repentance  to them,  so that they could again  start receiving the blessings  of the LORD.    But,  instead of taking God’s message  to heart,  they made plans  on how they would escape  whatever judgment  God would send  upon them.

Isaiah let them know  that there would be absolutely no way  they could escape  God’s coming  judgment.    Whatever kind  of escape plan they would make,  God would make them fail  —  just because  God loved them  and wanted to be merciful  to them.    God wanted  to set them back  on the right track,  so that they could be saved eternally,  but the Israelites preferred  their sinful life styles.    They didn’t want  to bow down  to God’s way  of living.

After telling them  they were sure  to fail,  in Isaiah 30:18,  the prophet tells Israel,

Therefore  the LORD longs  to be gracious  to you,
And therefore  He waits on high  to have compassion  on you.
For the LORD  is a God  of justice;
How blessed  are all those  who long  for Him.

God knows we’re trapped  in sin.     He knows  our every thought  and feeling — when we sit down  and get up — every place we go — every need we have — every wrong concept  of reality.     The LORD is literally longing  and waiting  to pour His grace  and compassion  on us.    He wants  to start blessing us  with everything  that will lead us  to eternal life.

We can keep on running away  from Him  and trying  to solve all of life’s problems  and temptations  all by ourselves.    Or,  we can wake up  to the loving goodness  of the Lord — confess our sins — and let ourselves be blessed  as we draw close  to God  in prayer  and meditation  in His word.

God does not want us  to be a failure  in this life.     He longs  for us  to win the prize  of eternal life  by coming  to know Him  as our Redeemer  and Savior — and then,  living according to  that realization  of eternal truth.

God’s calling is persistent,  isn’t it?    That’s good  because that is true love.

As we humbly bow  before our Lord  in repentance  and let Him be gracious  and compassionate  towards us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!    Lord,  thank You  for Your faithful love  and forgiveness.     We are so glad  You don’t give up  on us.”
