The Highest Heaven Cannot Contain Thee

The Highest Heaven Cannot Contain Thee

But will God indeed dwell  on the earth?     Behold,  heaven  and the highest heaven  cannot contain Thee…        1 Kings 8:27

There is no way anyone  can imagine  the awesome greatness  of the LORD.     Our minds  are so confined  to our small,  little parts  of this tiny world  (our world really is tiny  in comparison  to all of creation),  that we have a hard time imagining  something greater.     And yet,  the LORD  is the God  who knows our every thought  and feeling.     This is the God  who has loved each of us  so much  He sent Jesus Christ  to suffer and die  as the just payment  for our sins.

God is so big  and awesome  in every way,  and yet people “don’t know Him“.     How can that be?     We see the miracles  of creation  all around us  —  everything from the stars  to the worm  that aerates the soil  for us.     What is it  that we don’t get?

Instead of honoring and worshiping  the only real God,  silly people make idols  for themselves  to worship.    Jeremiah chapter 10  describes how people make idols  from wood,  silver  and gold.    They even have to work hard  to make them  in such a way  that they will not topple over.

God describes  these supposedly “wise” people  of the world.     In Jeremiah 10:8  God says,  “But they are altogether stupid  and foolish  in their discipline  of delusion — their idol  is wood!”

Jeremiah might have lived 2,600 years ago,  but his words are  just as true now.     There are millions  of people  throughout this world  that worship idols  even today.     They have a “discipline of delusion”.     Idol worship is not considered  old-fashion,  even though we now live  in the age  of science,  computers,  and space travel.     And,  the idol worshipers  of today  are not uneducated  by this world’s standards.    They are university professors,  scientists,  doctors,  teachers,  etc.     In other words,  they are people  of influence all around us.

Because they are still influential,  we need  to be aware  of how their way  of thinking  can affect our faith  and the faith  of our children.     Their superstitions,  rituals,  and traditions  can create fears  and doubts  that should be totally rejected  by God’s children.     Therefore,  Jeremiah 10:2-3 speaks  to us,

Thus says the LORD,
Do not learn  the way  of the nations,
And do not be terrified  by the signs  of the heavens
Although the nations are terrified  by them;
For the customs  of the peoples  are delusion

It is because  there is only one true God  that our life depends  on giving honor  where honor is due.     We are not  to be satisfied  with half truths  and outright lies  and delusions.     Why should we want  to fool ourselves?     It’s not worth it.

Our LORD takes  a very dim view  of those  who allow the idolaters  of this world  to run their lives.     That’s why He warns us  that all their customs  are delusions.     Because God alone  is the Creator,  Redeemer,  and Sustainer  of all things,  He does not want us  allowing unbelievers  to run our lives,  our faith,  or our children.     God is rightfully annoyed  when we are dumb enough  to fall  for the ways  of the world  —  after we have learned  and accepted  His truths.

We need  to wake up  to the half-baked truths  that are constantly bombarding us  through the media,  the Internet,  and our “educational” systems.     If we allow these “ideas”  to gradually rob us  of our faith  in the one true God,  we will soon find ourselves destitute  of everything  that is pure,  honest,  and holy.     We won’t know where  to turn  in our desperate need  for real help.

That is why  it is vital  for Christians today  to spend time every day  studying God’s word  and applying it  to their lives.     As we see God’s unchanging love  and faithfulness  over thousands of years,  we will be able  to rest  in Him  and say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  Your word  is eternally true.     Carry us in Your everlasting arms.”

Love,
Margaret
