You Are the Light of the World
Because Jesus is the way of salvation in this dark world — and we need to be able to see where we are headed spiritually — Jesus tells us in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.” And as we study the rest of God’s word, we can come to an understanding of how this is very true. We walk according to God’s ways when His light is in us.
If we want to know about eternal life (the light of life), there is only one way to get it — and that is by faith in Jesus Christ and His work of salvation on the cross for us.
Just as Jesus is our light in this world, He expects us to be lights to everyone around us. In Matthew 5:14, Jesus said to His followers, “You are the light of the world.” In other words, He wants His followers to live lives that show others around them the love and salvation they have experienced in Christ.
Whatever we are like in this world, those around us can see how we live and what it is we stand for. So, if we are shining examples of the love that God has for the world, we will be true lights for this world.
But, if we don’t live the way the Bible teaches, the world cannot see salvation in Christ as being anything worth looking into. And, we won’t be showing anyone what God is really like. This sort of thing happens when we ourselves don’t have enough of the light of Christ in our hearts. If we don’t have Christ in our hearts, there is no way He can shine through us and make us lights to this world.
If Christ is not in our hearts, we will have a greater tendency to often sin big time. So, instead of shining forth the love and salvation of God, a person will show others things like greed, selfishness, hatred, back-biting, gossip, thievery, pride, arrogance, etc. When Jesus talked about this type of situation, He said it like this in Matthew 6:22-23,
The lamp of the body is the eye; if therefore your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
If we can see the truths of God’s word and value it, we will have the light of God in our hearts. But, if we don’t see the truths of God’s word and prefer to live in sin, we are living in a great darkness — even if we claim to be a Christian.
God knows our hearts, our every thought and our every feeling. He knows whether or not our lives are filled with His light of salvation. If we can’t see good enough in this world to accept Jesus as our Savior and understand the importance of diligently living according to His word, we need some serious repenting and turning back to the Lord.
When we do come to a realization of the truth of God’s love for each of us, we will say, “Hallelujah! Lord, it’s so good to know Your love.”
Love,
Margaret
