What These Children Are Saying

What These Children Are Saying

It can be so embarrassing  when a child points out  a plain truth  that an adult  is refusing  to admit.     The child is not trying  to take anyone down.     In their innocence,  they are simply pointing out  the very obvious.

That’s how it was  in Matthew 21:14-17,  when Jesus was  in the temple…

And the blind and the lame came  to Him  in the temple,  and He healed them.     But  when the chief priests  and the scribes saw  the wonderful things  that He had done,  and the children  who were shouting  in the temple,  “Hosanna  to the Son of David,”  they became indignant  and said to Him,  “Do You hear  what these children  are saying?”

And Jesus said  to them,  “Yes;  have you never read,  ‘OUT OF THE MOUTH  OF INFANTS  AND NURSING BABIES  YOU HAVE PREPARED PRAISE  FOR YOURSELF’?”     And He left them  and went out of the city  to Bethany,  and spent the night there.

That whole happening  was an awesome  and majestic fulfillment  of Psalm 8:2,  which says,

O LORD,  our Lord,
How majestic is Your name  in all the earth,
Who have displayed Your splendor  above the heavens!

From the mouth  of infants and nursing babes  You have established strength
Because of Your adversaries,
To make the enemy  and the revengeful  cease.

See what God  can do.     The Bible’s reference to “infants and nursing babes”  also includes any person  that the arrogant chief priests and scribes deemed  to be without knowledge  —  not smart  —  dumb  —  simple  —  uneducated,  etc.     What “these children”  were saying  was the most obvious truth.

The chief priests and scribes put themselves  above the so-called  common people,  imagining themselves  to be smarter  and much more knowledgeable  about the ways  of God.     But,  the bottom line is  that we all need  to live  in a true faith,  true hope,  and true love.     Faith in God  and giving honest praise  where praise is due  shows a much greater depth  of knowledge  than anyone  with a lot of book learning  and no faith,  hope,  or love.

It’s as Jesus says  in Luke 18:16,

Permit the children  to come to Me,  and stop hindering them,  for the kingdom of God  belongs  to such as these.

We need  to have the honest faith  of a child.

Trusting  in God’s love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  great is Your faithfulness  towards us.     Always keep us close  to You.”

Love,
Margaret
