Truth in the Innermost Being
A common human failing is to not admit to the truths of the sin in our lives. We are so far from perfect, we stink in God’s holy eyes. And — we don’t have the power to make ourselves sinless or anywhere near being worthy of eternal life. The biggest lie that many fall for is their claim that they don’t have a desperate need for the power of Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection to pay for their sins of wandering away from God’s given truths in His holy word.
People will boldly live as if they are just fine making their way to heaven on their own terms. They stubbornly want to imagine that their personal goodness in this life is good enough for God. They are denying that faith in Christ Jesus’ shed blood has any power to wash away their sins.
But, about a thousand years before Christ’s coming, King David realized he needed to face the truth of his sins. All of Psalm 51 is the pouring out of his heart before God. In verse 6, David admitted,
Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being,
And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.
Only God can help us to honestly face the truth of our desperate needs as we pay attention to all He says in His word to us.
We need God’s “wisdom” deep down in our hearts. Mankind’s pretentious wisdom only takes us away from the eternal truths of God’s word. David realized his own sinful inclinations would only condemn him in the end. He simply didn’t have God’s strength and righteousness to do anything rightly. He had to humble himself and admit to the power of God alone to straighten out his life. In repentance, David prayed in verses 10-11,
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
That needs to be the daily prayer of each and every one of us as we search for “truth in the innermost being”. And, the “truth” is that the only wise thing to do is to follow God’s instructions in the Bible. God lovingly tells us to simply put our whole faith in the power of Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection to take away the guilt of our every sin.
As we understand how Jesus actually has paid for our every sin, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord Jesus, thank You for loving us and willingly paying the penalty for our sins. Strengthen us to live in Your truths.”
Love,
Margaret
