That He Might Humble You
Many people tend to feel rather sure of themselves when it comes to knowing what they want — how they want it — and when they want it. People naturally think they surely know what is best for them. And of course, they think what is “best” needs to include good health, some wealth, etc.
But, our LORD knows we are only thinking this from a very worldly outlook on life. Our sinful natures usually do not first think of the importance of trusting and obeying God Almighty, as our very most top priority. Trusting and obeying God is an absolute necessity because we are living in a very deceitful and sinful world. So, in love our LORD knows He needs to teach us the most important things leading to eternal life.
That is when we often think we don’t want to be in God’s school. It can be really tough learning the lessons of trusting and obeying. Deuteronomy, chapter 8 explains God’s methods in giving us the right understanding of how we need to make our way through this earthly life.
Moses had helped the Israelites throughout their travels in the wilderness after God had freed them from slavery in Egypt. They had experienced many challenges and were getting ready to enter the Promised Land. That’s when Moses taught the people about how God teaches us all to stay on the path to eternal life. Moses said in Deuteronomy 8:2-3,
You shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.
Everybody needs to become “humble” before the Lord in order to learn to trust and obey. The Israelites were “humbled” when they had nothing to eat in the wilderness. God knows how to “humble” us with so many different challenges in our lives. We can have problems that only God can resolve. Humbly asking God for help and remembering how God has cared for us in the past leads us to trust and praise God as we ought.
When we humbly trust God, He will lead and care for us in the way that is eternally good for us. 1 Peter 5:6-7 tells us to,
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you.
God’s love allows us to have troubles, so we can learn to honestly trust and obey. Humbly looking to God for all our needs, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, Your ways are eternally good for us. Thank You.”
Love,
Margaret
